Nahj al-Burda — Ahmad Shawqī, Prince of Poets
The Prince of Poets, Ahmed Shawqi, composed this poem in emulation of Al-Busiri's Burda, meticulously adhering to its meter and rhyme scheme. It stands as one of the most sublime works of Prophetic praise in the modern era, having been widely recited and sung throughout the East and West.
A gazelle upon the plain, amidst the ban trees and the mountain, has sanctioned the shedding of my blood even within the sacred months.
Fate, through the eyes of a fawn, struck down a lion; O dweller of the plain, hasten to aid the one who dwells in the thicket of love.
When it cast its gaze, my soul whispered to me, saying, "Alas for your side, for it has been pierced by the unerring arrow."
I denied its truth and concealed the arrow deep within my liver, for the wounds inflicted by beloveds are, to me, devoid of pain.
You ﷺ were endowed with the most magnanimous of human dispositions, especially when you were granted the grace to seek excuses for others' natures.
O you who blame me for my love, though love is destiny, had passion consumed you, you would neither have admonished nor reproached.
Indeed, I have lent you an ear that does not truly comprehend, for often one listens intently while the heart remains deaf.
O you with drowsy eyes, may you never taste love, for you have kept your afflicted lover sleepless in guarding this love, so now, sleep on.
I would sacrifice myself for you, beloved, and spare no effort for your mere image; who tempted you with such parsimony, when he himself was tempted by generosity?
It journeyed forth and encountered a bleeding wound, which it then healed, and indeed, there is often a great favor bestowed upon lovers through forbearance.
Who are these women, swaying like ban trees on the hills and like slender spears, who play with my very soul and shed my blood?
They are the unveiled ones, like full moons at midday, whose jewelry and bracelets make even the mid-morning sun envious.
They are the killers with eyelids that bear a languid sickness, for indeed, death often finds its causes in illness.
They are the ones who cause men's minds to stumble, yet they never alleviate the stumbles of their alluring coquetry in their very essence.
They are the igniters, with cheeks unveiled and radiant, revealing a temptation that surrenders hearts to burning passion.
They are the bearers of beauty's banner, whose forms are varied, yet beauty itself remains singular and undivided.
From every fair or dark-skinned woman, adorned for the eye, their beauty, like that of gazelles, is as captivating as amulets.
They startle the loftiest gaze, and it is wondrous how, with a mere gesture, they can capture the lion with the sheep.
I have laid down my cheek and divided my heart into hills, where they may graze freely in its dens and upon its mounds.
O daughter of the one with the protected mane, shall I find you in the forest or shall I find you within the fortress?
I did not realize, until his dwelling became manifest, that both aspirations and destinies pitch their tents in the same abode.
Who caused the tender branch to sprout from a mighty, sharp sword, and brought forth the graceful gazelle from a ravenous, fierce lion?
Between me and you stand barriers of dark spears, alongside the equally formidable veils of chaste, virginal purity.
I never visited your abode except within the folds of slumber, for your dwelling is more distant for the yearning soul than the legendary city of Iram.
O my soul, your worldly life hides every cause for weeping, even when a beautiful smile appears to you from it.
With your piety, break open its mouth whenever it smiles, just as one breaks the venomous fangs of a speckled serpent.
She has been sought in marriage since humanity first became suitors, and from the dawn of time, she has neither been widowed nor orphaned.
Time will pass away, yet from her malice, a wound remains in Adam, from which he weeps within his very flesh.
Do not concern yourself with its fruits or its transgressions, for death amidst flowers is no different from death amidst charcoal.
How many a sleeper fails to perceive her (the world's) vigilance, for were it not for hopes and dreams, he would never find rest.
At one moment, she extends to you comfort and well-being, and at another, she casts you into the abyss of misery and disgrace.
How often has she led you astray, for whoever's insight is veiled will drink bitter aloes if he finds it, or poison himself with colocynth.
Oh, woe is my soul, terrified and overwhelmed by the blackened pages of deeds amidst the whitened locks of old age.
I let it gallop freely in the fertile pastures of disobedience, and took no preventative measure from the abstinence of good deeds against its gluttony.
It wandered aimlessly, pursuing pleasures, for the soul, when summoned by the call of youth, rushes headlong into desire.
The rectitude of your affairs is rooted in good morals, so discipline your soul with virtues, and it shall become upright.
The soul, by its goodness, resides in the best of well-being, while by its evil, it dwells in a noxious pasture.
It transgresses when given free rein to pleasure and desire, much like spirited steeds that bite at their bits and become unruly.
Even if my sin is too immense for forgiveness, I hold hope in Allah, who will place me in the best of refuges.
I cast my hope, when helpers are few, upon the reliever of distress and sorrows in both worlds.
When I humbly lower myself to ask him ﷺ for the glory of intercession, I ask for nothing less than the salvation of nations.
And if a devout soul presents a righteous deed, I would offer before him ﷺ only the tear of remorse.
I have clung to the door of the Prince of Prophets ﷺ, for whoever holds the key to God's door shall surely attain great gain.
For every grace, kindness, and favor flows between those who receive from him ﷺ and those who adhere to him.
I have grasped a rope from his praise ﷺ, by which I shall be honored on a Day when neither lineage nor kinship will confer any glory.
My verse, when I praise him ﷺ, diminishes Zuhayr's, and my reward cannot be measured against his bounty from Harim.
Muhammad ﷺ is the chosen one of the Creator and His mercy, the very desire of God from all creation and every soul.
He ﷺ is the master of the Pond (Kawthar) on the Day when even the Messengers will inquire, "When is the arrival?" and the trustworthy Gabriel himself will be parched.
His ﷺ splendor and light are like the rising sun, for while the sun's body is in its orbit, his light is a towering banner.
The stars themselves failed to reach the lofty glory and sublime manifestation that his ﷺ ancestry attained.
His ancestors grew towards him ﷺ, thereby increasing in honor among humanity, for often an origin derives its glory from its branch.
Before them, two lights contained him ﷺ within realms of purity, standing in the stead of loins and wombs.
When Bahira the monk saw him ﷺ, he declared, "We recognize him by the names and characteristics we have preserved."
Ask Hira and the Holy Spirit (Gabriel) if they comprehended the preserved secret, hidden from all understanding, that was revealed there.
How many comings and goings honored the valley of Mecca, both in the morning and the evening, by his ﷺ presence.
And the solitude of the son of Abdullah ﷺ between those times was more cherished than the company of noble lineages and retinues.
He ﷺ communed with revelation there before its full descent, for whoever is heralded by the signs of goodness is truly marked by it.
When his companions ﷺ called for water in their thirst, his hands overflowed with the purest spring (Tasnim), yielding abundant streams.
A cloud shaded him ﷺ, then itself sought shade from him, a cloud drawn by the finest of continuous rains.
A love for the Messenger of God ﷺ was instilled even in the recluses of the monasteries and the monks on the mountain peaks.
Indeed, when character traits are refined, even inanimate objects are almost charmed by them, and every living being is captivated.
And it was proclaimed, "Read!" exalted be God, its Speaker, for it had never before been uttered by a mouth to the one to whom it was addressed.
There, he called to prayer for the Most Merciful, and the ears of Mecca were filled with the sanctity of that sacred melody.
So do not ask about Quraysh, how great was their bewilderment, and how widespread their aversion across the plains and mountains.
They questioned about a great matter that had befallen them, striking both elders and children with a touch of madness.
O you who are ignorant of the Guide and his call, do you truly ignore the stature of the truthful, distinguished one?
You yourselves titled him "the Trustworthy" among the people in his youth, and the trustworthy one is never accused of falsehood.
He surpassed the full moons and surpassed the prophets, how abundant was his beauty and greatness in both character and creation!
The prophets came with signs that eventually ceased, but you ﷺ came to us with a wise scripture that never ceases.
Its verses, the longer time passes, become ever new, adorned by the majesty of their antiquity and timelessness.
Almost in every honored word from him ﷺ, he enjoins you to truth, piety, and kinship.
O most eloquent of all who speak the Arabic tongue, your discourse is like honey to the discerning connoisseur.
You adorned the neck of eloquence, which was once bare, with it, making every scattered thought beautifully ordered.
With every noble word you ﷺ utter, you revive hearts and bring dead aspirations back to life.
Glad tidings of the Guide and his birth spread throughout the East and West, like light traversing through darkness.
It snatched away the souls of the Arab tyrants and scattered the spirits of the foreign oppressors.
The glory of the Iwan (Persian palace) was startled by it and cracked, from the shock of truth, not from the shock of feet.
You ﷺ came when people were in chaos, and you would not pass by them without seeing an idol infatuated with another idol.
And the earth was filled with injustice, subjugated to every tyrant who ruled over creation.
The ruler of Persia oppressed his subjects, and the Caesar of Rome, out of arrogance, was deaf and blind.
They torment God's servants with suspicions and slaughter them as you ﷺ sacrificed sheep.
And among creation, the strongest prey upon the weakest, like the lion upon lambs or the whale upon small fish.
God carried you ﷺ by night when His angels and messengers stood awaiting in Al-Aqsa Mosque.
When you ﷺ entered it, they gathered around their master, like stars encircling the full moon or soldiers around their banner.
Every one of high rank among them prayed behind you ﷺ, for whoever is blessed with God's Beloved shall lead the prayer.
You traversed the heavens, or what lies beyond them, with them, upon a luminous mount with reins of pearls.
A mount bestowed upon you ﷺ of glory and honor, unlike any noble steed or swift she-camel.
It was the will and creation of the Creator, the Maker, and the power of God transcends all doubt and accusation.
Until you ﷺ reached a heaven to which one cannot fly on wings, nor journey on foot.
And it was proclaimed, "Every prophet is at his rank, but O Muhammad ﷺ, this is the Throne, so approach it."
You ﷺ outlined the sciences of both religion and the world, O reader of the Preserved Tablet, nay, O toucher of the Pen.
You encompassed the secret between them, and the treasures of knowledge and wisdom were revealed to you ﷺ.
And the proximity multiplied the countless favors with which you ﷺ were entrusted, and the blessings with which you were adorned.
Ask the band of polytheists grazing around the cave; had it not been for their pursuit of the Chosen One ﷺ, they would not have been named.
Did they perceive the luminous trace, or hear the whisper of glorifications and the Quran from unseen nations?
And did the spider's web appear to them like a dense forest, and the hovering birds and their young like vultures?
So they turned away, and the faces of the earth cursed them, like falsehood defeated by the majesty of truth.
Had it not been for God's hand protecting the two companions, they would not have been safe, and without His watchful eye, the pillar of religion would not have been established.
They hid under the wing of God and were concealed, for whoever is embraced by God's wing shall never be harmed.
O Ahmad ﷺ of goodness, I possess honor through my name, for how could one not be elevated by sharing a name with the Messenger ﷺ?
The praisers and those consumed by love are but followers of the owner of the fragrant mantle, who holds the highest standing.
His praise of you ﷺ is pure love and ardent passion, for true love always dictates truthful words.
Allah bears witness that I do not oppose him, for who can contend with the downpour of a mighty, overflowing cloud?
