أم القرى في مدح خير الورى — الإمام شرف الدين البوصيري (ت 696هـ)

من عيون المدائح النبوية، نظمها الإمام البوصيري رحمه الله في سيرة النبي ﷺ وشمائله ومعجزاته، ومطلعها المشهور: «كيف ترقى رقيك الأنبياء». تُدرَّس وتُنشد في مجالس العلم والذكر شرقًا وغربًا.

Al-Hamziyya — Imam Sharaf ad-Dīn al-Būṣīrī

Among the most exquisite prophetic eulogies is this poem, composed by Imam al-Busiri (may Allah have mercy on him), which chronicles the biography of the Prophet ﷺ, his noble characteristics, and his miracles. Its renowned opening line is: 'How could prophets ascend to your eminence?' It is studied and recited in gatherings of knowledge and remembrance, both in the East and the West.

كيف ترقَى رُقِيَّك الأَنبياءُ
يا سماءً ما طاوَلَتْها سماءُ

How can prophets ever ascend to your exalted rank, O sky that no other sky has ever equaled in height?

لَمْ يُساوُوك في عُلاكَ وَقَدْ حا
لَ سناً مِنك دونَهم وسَناءُ

They could not equal you in your eminence, for a radiant light and splendor from you stood as a barrier, setting you apart from them.

إنّما مَثَّلُوا صِفاتِك للنا
س كما مثَّلَ النجومَ الماءُ

Indeed, they merely represented your qualities to humanity, much as water reflects the stars, showing only a semblance.

أنتَ مِصباحُ كلِّ فضلٍ فما تَص
دُرُ إلا عن ضوئِكَ الأَضواءُ

You are the lamp of every virtue, for all other lights emanate and derive solely from your radiant glow.

لكَ ذاتُ العلومِ من عالِمِ الغَي
بِ ومنها لآدمَ الأَسماءُ

To you belongs the very essence of knowledge from the Knower of the Unseen, and it is from this same source that Adam received the knowledge of the names.

لم تَزَلْ في ضمائرِ الكونِ تُختَا
رُ لك الأُمهاتُ الأَباءُ

You were ever present in the hidden depths of creation, where mothers and fathers were chosen for you through a lineage of purity.

ما مضتْ فَترةٌ من الرُّسْلِ إِلّا
بَشَّرَتْ قومَها بِكَ الأَنبياءُ

No era between messengers ever passed without the prophets foretelling your coming to their respective peoples.

تتباهَى بِكَ العصورُ وَتَسْمو
بِكَ علْياءٌ بعدَها علياءُ

The ages boast of your advent, and through you, one height of glory after another is continuously elevated.

وَبَدا للوُجُودِ منك كريمٌ
من كريمٍ آبَاؤُه كُرماءُ

And from you, a noble one appeared to existence, born of a noble lineage whose fathers were all noble.

نَسَبٌ تَحسِبُ العُلا بِحُلاهُ
قَلَّدَتْهَا نجومهَا الْجَوزاءُ

A lineage so adorned that by its beauty, one measures true eminence, and even the stars of the Gemini constellation have adorned themselves with its splendor.

حبذا عِقْدُ سُؤْدُدٍ وَفَخَارٍ
أنتَ فيه اليتيمةُ العصماءُ

How excellent is that necklace of glory and pride, in which you ﷺ are the unique and most precious pearl.

وُمُحَيّاً كالشَّمس منكَ مُضِيءٌ
أسْفَرَت عنه ليلةٌ غَرّاءُ

And a countenance from you, shining like the sun, was revealed on a glorious and radiant night.

ليلةُ المولدِ الذي كَان للدِّي
نِ سرورٌ بيومِهِ وازْدِهاءُ

It was the night of his ﷺ birth, whose day brought immense joy and splendor to the religion.

وتوالَتْ بُشْرَى الهواتفِ أن قدْ
وُلِدَ المصطفى وحُقّ الهَناءُ

And glad tidings from unseen voices followed one another, proclaiming that the Chosen One ﷺ had been born, and thus, happiness was truly deserved.

وتَدَاعَى إيوانُ كِسْرَى ولَوْلا
آيةٌ مِنكَ ما تَدَاعَى البناءُ

And the Iwan of Kisra crumbled, for had it not been for a miraculous sign from you ﷺ, that grand edifice would never have collapsed.

وغَدَا كلُّ بيتِ نارٍ وفيهِ
كُرْبَةٌ مِنْ خُمودِها وَبلاءُ

And every house of fire became extinguished, bringing distress and calamity to its worshippers from its sudden demise.

وعيونٌ لِلْفُرسِ غارَتْ فهل كا
نَ لنِيرانِهِم بها إطفاءُ

And the springs of the Persians dried up; was it not by this very act that their sacred fires were extinguished?

مَوْلِدٌ كان منهُ في طالعِ الكُفْ
رِ وبالٌ عليهِمُ ووباءُ

A birth from which, in the destiny of disbelief, came ruin and a plague upon its adherents.

فَهنيئاً به لآمِنَةَ الفَض
لُ الذي شُرِّفَتْ به حوَّاءُ

So congratulations to Aminah for him ﷺ, for she attained a virtue by which even Eve herself was honored.

مَنْ لِحَوَّاءَ أنها حملَتْ أحْ
مدَ أو أنها به نُفَسَاءُ

For who among women, including Eve, could claim the honor of having carried Ahmad ﷺ or having experienced the blessed postpartum after his birth?

يوْمَ نَالت بِوَضْعِهِ ابنَةُ وَهْبٍ
مِنْ فَخَارٍ ما لم تَنَلْهُ النِّساءُ

On the day Wahb's daughter (Amina) attained, through his birth, such glory as no other woman had ever achieved.

وَأَتَتْ قومَها بأفضلَ مما
حَمَلَتْ قبلُ مريمُ العذراءُ

And she came to her people bearing something superior to what the Virgin Mary had carried before.

شمَّتته الأَملاكُ إذ وضَعَتْهُ
وشَفَتْنَا بِقَوْلِهَا الشَّفّاءُ

The angels congratulated her upon his birth, and with their healing words, they brought us solace.

رافعاً رأسَه وفي ذلك الرف
ع إلى كل سُؤْدُدٍ إيماءُ

He ﷺ was born raising his head, and in that gesture was an intimation of all future glory and eminence.

رامقاً طَرْفه السَّماءَ ومَرْمَى
عينِ مَنْ شَأْنُهُ العُلُوُّ العَلاءُ

His gaze was fixed upon the heavens, the very aim of one whose destiny is supreme loftiness and exaltation.

وتَدَلَّتْ زُهْرُ النُّجومِ إليهِ
فأضاءت بِضوئها الأَرجاءُ

And the bright stars descended towards him, illuminating all the surrounding regions with their light.

وتراءت قصورُ قَيصَر بالرُّو
مِ يَرَاهَا مَنْ دَارُهُ البطحاءُ

The palaces of Caesar in Rome became visible, seen by one whose home was the sandy valley of Mecca.

وبَدَتْ فِي رَضَاعِهِ مُعْجِزَاتٌ
لَيْس فيها عنِ العيون خَفَاءُ

And during his nursing, miracles became manifest, clear and undeniable to all eyes.

إذْ أَبَتْهُ لِيُتْمِهِ مُرْضِعاتٌ
قُلْنَ ما في اليتيمِ عنا غَنَاءُ

For wet nurses had refused him due to his orphanhood, declaring, "An orphan offers us no gain."

فأتتهُ من آلِ سعدٍ فتاةٌ
قد أبَتْهَا لِفَقْرِهَا الرُّضَعاءُ

Then a young woman from the tribe of Sa'd came to him, whom other infants had refused due to her poverty.

أرْضَعتْهُ لِبَانَهَا فَسَقَتْهَا
وَبنِيها أَلْبَانَهُنَّ الشَّاءُ

She nursed him with her milk, and in return, her sheep provided her and her children with abundant milk.

أَصْبَحَتْ شُوَّلاً عِجافا وأمْسَتْ
ما بِها شائلٌ ولا عَجْفاءُ

Her sheep, which had been dry and emaciated in the morning, became by evening neither dry nor lean.

أخْصَبَ العَيْشُ عِنْدَهَا بعدَ مَحْلٍ
إذ غَدا للنبيِّ منها غِذاءُ

Life became abundant for her after a period of drought, as the Prophet ﷺ received his nourishment from her.

يا لَها مِنَّةً لقدْ ضُوعِفَ الأَجْ
رُ عليها من جِنْسِها والجزَاءُ

Oh, what a blessing, for the reward and recompense for her act were multiplied manifold, in kind and beyond.

وإذا سخَّرَ الإِلهُ أُناساً
لسعيدٍ فإِنهم سُعَداءُ

And when God makes people subservient to a blessed individual, then those people themselves become blessed.

حَبَّة أَنْبَتَتْ سَنَابِلَ والعَص
فُ لَدَيْهِ يَسْتَشْرِفُ الضُّعَفَاءُ

He ﷺ was like a single grain that sprouted many ears, from which even the weak sought sustenance from its chaff.

وَأَتَتْ جَدَّهُ وقد فَصَلَتْهُ
وبِهَا مِنْ فِصَالِهِ البُرَحَاءُ

And she came to his grandfather after weaning him, overwhelmed by the distress of his departure.

إذ أحاطتْ به ملائكةُ الل
هِ فظنَّتْ بأنهم قُرَنَاءُ

For the angels of God had surrounded him, making her think they were his companions.

ورأى وَجْدَها به ومِنَ الوَج
دِ لهيبٌ تَصْلَى بهِ الأَحْشاءُ

And he ﷺ saw her intense devotion to him, a love so ardent that it felt like a flame burning within her heart.

فَارَقَتْهُ كُرْهَاً وكان لَدَيْهَا
ثاوِياً لا يُمَلُّ مِنْهُ الثّواءُ

She parted from him unwillingly, for his stay with her had been a residence from which she never grew weary.

شُقَّ عَنْ قَلْبِهِ وأُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ
مُضْغَةٌ عِنْدَ غَسْلِهِ سوداءُ

During its purification, a black clot was extracted from his ﷺ heart after it was split open.

خَتَمَتْهُ يُمْنَى الأَمينِ وقد أُو
دِعَ ما لم تُذَع له أَنْبَاءُ

The right hand of the Trustworthy Angel sealed his ﷺ heart, which was then entrusted with secrets whose tidings had not yet been divulged.

صانَ أَسْرَارَه الخِتَامُ فلا الفَضْ
ضُ مُلِمٌّ بِهِ وَلا الإِفضاءُ

The seal protected its secrets, so neither could it be broken into nor its contents divulged.

أَلِفَ النُّسْكَ والعبادةَ والخَل
وةَ طِفلاً وهكذا النُّجَبَاءُ

As a child, he ﷺ became accustomed to devotion, worship, and solitude, for such is the way of the noble.

وإذا حَلَّتِ الْهِدَايَةُ قَلْبَاً
نَشِطَتْ في العبادة الأَعضاءُ

When guidance settles in a heart, the limbs become active and eager in worship.

بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عندَ مبعثهِ الشُّه
بَ حِراساً وضاقَ عنها الفضاءُ

At his ﷺ advent, Allah sent forth meteors as guards, and the vast expanse of the heavens became constricted by them.

تَطْرُدُ الجِنَّ عن مقاعدَ للسَّمْ
عِ كما تَطْرُدُ الذِّئابَ الرِّعاءُ

These meteors drove away the jinn from their listening posts, just as shepherds drive away wolves.

فَمَحَتْ آيةُ الكَهَانَةِ آيا
تٌ مِنَ الوحْيِ ما لَهنَّ امِّحاءُ

Thus, the signs of soothsaying were erased by the verses of divine revelation, which can never be obliterated.

ورأَتْهُ خديجةٌ والتُّقَى وال
زُّهْدُ فيه سجيَّةٌ والحياءُ

Khadijah observed him ﷺ, and she saw that piety, asceticism, and modesty were his inherent nature.

وأتاها أن الغمامةَ والسر
حَ أَظَلَّتْهُ منهما أفياءُ

News reached her that the cloud and the tree provided him ﷺ with their protective shade.

وأحاديث أنَّ وَعْدَ رسولِ ال
له بالبعثِ حانَ منه الوفاءُ

And reports circulated that the promise of Allah's Messenger ﷺ concerning his advent was nearing its fulfillment.

فدَعَتْهُ إلى الزواجِ وما أَحْ
سَنَ ما يبلغُ المُنَى الأَذكياءُ

So she invited him ﷺ to marriage, and how excellent it is that the intelligent attain their desires with such wisdom.

وأتاهُ في بيتها جَبْرَئيلٌ
ولِذي اللُّبِّ في الأُمورِ ارْتياءُ

And Gabriel came to him ﷺ in her house, for a person of intellect possesses discernment in such momentous affairs.

فأماطت عنها الخِمَارَ لتَدْري
أهُوَ الوحْيُ أم هو الإِغماءُ

So she removed her head covering to discern whether it was truly revelation or merely a faint.

فاختفى عند كشفِها الرأْسَ جِبْري
لُ فما عادَ أو أُعيدَ الغِطاءُ

Gabriel disappeared when she uncovered her head, and he did not return until the covering was replaced.

فاستبانت خديجةٌ أنه الكنْ
زُ الذي حَاوَلَتْهُ والكِيميَاءُ

Khadijah then became certain that he ﷺ was the treasure she had sought and the very alchemy of transformation.

ثم قام النبيُّ يدعو إلى الل
هِ وفي الكُفرِ نَجْدَةٌ وإباءُ

Then the Prophet ﷺ rose, calling to Allah, even though disbelief was strong and defiant.

أُمَمَاً أُشرِبَتُ قلوبُهُم الكُف
رَ فَدَاءُ الضَّلالِ فيهم عَيَاءُ

He called nations whose hearts were steeped in disbelief, making the cure for their misguidance intractable.

ورأينا آياتِه فاهتدَيْنَا
وإذا الحقُّ جاء زالَ المِراءُ

And we saw his ﷺ signs, so we were guided, for when the truth comes, all doubt vanishes.

رَبِّ إِنَّ الهُدى هُداك وَآيا
تُكَ نورٌ تَهْدِي بها من تشاءُ

My Lord, indeed guidance is Your guidance, and Your signs are a light by which You guide whomever You will.

كم رأَيْنَا ما ليس يَعْقِلُ قد أُلْ
هم ما ليْس يُلْهَمُ العُقلاءُ

How often have we witnessed that which lacks intellect being inspired with insights denied to the most rational of beings.

إذ أبى الفيلُ ما أتى صاحبُ الفي
لِ ولم ينفعِ الحِجا والذكاءُ

This was evident when the elephant refused to obey its master, the owner of the elephants, and neither his wisdom nor his intelligence could prevail.

والجماداتُ أفصحت بالذي أُخ
رِسَ عنه لأَحمدَ الفُصحاءُ

Even inanimate objects spoke clearly of truths for Ahmad ﷺ, about which the most eloquent of speakers were rendered speechless.

ويْحَ قومٍ جَفَوا نَبِيَّاً بأرضٍ
أَلِفَتْهُ ضِبَابُها والظِّبَاءُ

Woe to a people who shunned a Prophet ﷺ in a land where even its hyenas and gazelles had grown accustomed to his presence.

وَسَلَوْهُ وَحَنَّ جِذعٌ إِليه
وَقَلَوْهُ وَوَدَّهٌ الغُرَباءُ

They abandoned him, yet a tree trunk yearned for him; they hated him, yet strangers held him dear.

أخرَجوه منها وآوَاهُ غارٌ
وَحَمَتْهُ حَمامَةٌ وَرقاءُ

They drove him from his home, but a cave offered him shelter, and a grey dove provided him protection.

وَكَفَتْهُ بِنَسْجِها عنكبوتٌ
ما كَفَتْهُ الحمامةُ الحَصْداءُ

A spider, with its delicate weaving, provided him protection that even a robust dove could not have afforded.

وَاختفى منهمُ على قُرْبٍ مَرْآ
هُ ومن شِدَّةِ الظهورِ الخَفَاءُ

He remained hidden from them even when they were close enough to see him, a concealment born paradoxically from the very intensity of his presence.

وَنَحا المصطفى المدينةَ وَاشتا
قتْ إليه من مكةَ الأَنحاءُ

The Chosen One ﷺ then journeyed towards Medina, while the very regions of Mecca yearned for his return.

وَتغنّتْ بِمَدْحِهِ الْجِنُّ حتَّى
أطرَبَ الإِنسَ منه ذاك الغِناءُ

The jinn sang praises of him ﷺ, their melodies so enchanting that they brought delight even to humankind.

وَاقتفى إثْرَهُ سُراقَةُ فاستَهْ
وَتهُ في الأَرْضِ صافنٌ جَرْداءُ

Suraqa pursued his tracks, but his swift, powerful horse sank into the earth, holding him captive.

ثم ناداهُ بعدَما سِيمَتِ الخَس
فَ العُلا وَقَد يُنْجِدُ الغريقَ النِّداءُ

Then Suraqa called out to him ﷺ after his noble steed was humbled, for indeed, a cry can rescue one who is drowning.

فطوى الأَرضَ سائرا وَالسموا
تِ العُلا فوقَها له إِسراءُ

He traversed the earth on foot, yet the high heavens above were also his destination during the miraculous Night Journey.

فصِفِ الليلةَ التي كان للمُخ
تارِ فيها على البُراقِ استواءُ

Therefore, describe that wondrous night when the Chosen One ﷺ was mounted upon the Buraq.

وترقى به إلى قابِ قَوْسَيْ
نِ وَتِلكَ السيادةُ القَعْساءُ

He ascended with it to the distance of two bow-lengths, a testament to his supreme and unyielding sovereignty.

رُتَبٌ تَسْقُط الأَمانيُّ حَسْرَى
دونَها ما وراءهن وَرَاءُ

These are ranks so exalted that all aspirations fall short in regret before them, for beyond them, there is no further ascent.

ثم وافَى يحدِّثُ الناسَ شُكْرَاً
إذ أتته من ربِّه النَّعْماءُ

Then he returned, recounting to the people with gratitude the immense blessings that had been bestowed upon him by his Lord.

وتَحَدَّى فارتابَ كلُّ مُريبٍ
أَوَ يَبْقَى مع السُّيُولِ الغُثاءُ

He issued his challenge, causing every doubter to waver, for how can mere scum persist amidst the mighty floods?

وَهْوَ يدعو إلى الإِلهِ وَإن شق
قَ عليه كفرٌ به وَازدِراءُ

He ﷺ continued to call humanity to God, even though their disbelief and scorn caused him great hardship.

وَيَدُلُّ الورَى على اللَّهِ بالتَّوْ
حيدِ وَهْوَ المَحَجَّةُ البَيْضاءُ

He ﷺ guides all creation to God through the principle of divine unity, which is indeed the clear and luminous path.

فَبِمَا رحمةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ لانَتْ
صَخْرةٌ مِنْ إبائِهم صَمَّاءُ

By a mercy from Allah, the deaf rock of their stubbornness softened.

وَاستجابَتْ له بنصرٍ وَفَتْحٍ
بعد ذاكَ الخضراء والغبراءُ

And after that, the green and dusty earth responded to him with victory and conquest.

وَأَطاعَتْ لأَمْرِهِ العَرَبُ العَرْ
باء وَالْجَاهِلِيَّةُ الْجَهْلاءُ

The pure Arabs and the utterly ignorant people of Jahiliyyah obeyed his command.

وَتَوالَتْ للمصطفى الآيةُ الكبْ
رَى عليهمْ وَالغارةُ الشَّعْواءُ

For the Chosen One ﷺ, great signs and scattered raids followed one after another upon them.

فإذا ما تلا كتابا من الل
هِ تَلَتْهُ كَتِيبَةٌ خضراءُ

When he recited a book from Allah, a green battalion followed him.

وَكفاهُ المستهزئينَ وَكم سا
ءَ نبِيَّاً من قومِه استهزاءُ

Allah sufficed him against the mockers, for how often has mockery from his own people harmed a prophet.

وَرَماهم بِدَعْوَةٍ من فِناءِ ال
بَيتِ فيهَا للظالمين فَنَاءُ

And he ﷺ cast upon them a supplication from the courtyard of the Kaaba, which contained annihilation for the oppressors.

خمسةٌ كُلُّهم أُصيبوا بداءٍ
والرَّدَى من جنودِهِ الأَدوَاءُ

Five individuals were all afflicted with a disease, for diseases are among the soldiers of death.

فدَهَى الأَسودَ بنَ مُطَّلِبٍ أَي
يُ عمىً مَيِّتٌ به الأَحياءُ

It struck Al-Aswad bin Al-Muttalib with such blindness that even the living were as if dead by it.

وَدَهَى الأَسودَ بنَ عبدِ يغوثٍ
أن سَقَاهُ كأسَ الرَّدَى اسْتِسْقَاءُ

And it struck Al-Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth by making him drink the cup of death as if quenching a thirst.

وأَصابَ الوليدَ خَدْشَةُ سَهْمٍ
قَصَّرَتْ عنها الْحَيَّةُ الرَّقْطاءُ

And Al-Walid was afflicted by a mere scratch from an arrow, yet its venom was so potent that even a speckled snake's bite would fall short of its effect.

وَقَضَتْ شَوْكَةٌ على مَهْجَةِ العا
صِي فللّهِ النَّقْمَة الشَّوْكاءُ

And a thorn ended the life of the disobedient, for to Allah belongs the piercing vengeance.

وَعَلا الحارثَ القُيُوحُ وَقد سا
لَ بِها رأسُه وَساء الوِعاءُ

And pus covered Al-Harith, flowing from his head, and his head became a foul vessel.

خمسةٌ طُهِّرَتْ بِقَطْعِهِم الأَر
ضُ فَكَفُّ الأَذى بهم شَلَّاءُ

These five, by their demise, purified the earth, rendering the hand of harm paralyzed through them.

فُدِيَتْ خمسةُ الصَّحيفةِ بالخَم
سةِ إن كان بالكرام فِدَاءُ

The five who signed the parchment were ransomed by these five, if indeed noble lives can serve as a ransom.

فِتْيَةٌ بَيَّتُوا على فِعلِ خَيْرٍ
حَمِد الصبحُ أمرَهم وَالمَساءُ

They were youths who resolved to do good, and both morning and evening praised their deed.

يَا لأَمر أَتاهُ بعدَ هِشامٍ
زَمْعَةٌ إنه الفتَى الأَتَّاءُ

Oh, what a matter came to him after Hisham, Zam'ah, for he was the youth who came forth.

وَزُهَيْرٌ وَالْمُطْعِمُ بنُ عَدِيٍّ
وَأبو البَخْتَرِيِّ مِنْ حيث شاؤوا

And Zuhayr, Al-Mut'im bin Adiyy, and Abu Al-Bakhtari joined them from wherever they wished.

نَقَضُوا مُبْرَمَ الصَّحيفةِ إذ شد
دَت عليهم من العِدا الأَنداءُ

They broke the firmly sealed parchment when the enemies' hardship intensified upon them.

أذْكَرَتْنَا بِأَكْلِهَا أكلَ مِنْسَا
ةِ سُلَيْمانَ الأَرْضَةُ الخَرساءُ

By its consumption, the silent termite reminded us of its eating of Solomon's staff.

وَبهَا أخبَر النبيُّ وكم أخ
رَجَ خَبْئاً له الغُيُوبُ خِبَاءُ

And through it, the Prophet ﷺ gave tidings, revealing many hidden truths for which the unseen realms had been a veil.

لا تَخَلْ جانِبَ النبيِّ مُضَاماً
حينَ مَسَّتْهُ منهمُ الأَسْواءُ

Do not imagine the Prophet ﷺ to be wronged when evils touched him from his adversaries.

كلُّ أمرٍ نَابَ النبيِّينَ فالشد
دَةُ فيه محمودةٌ وَالرّخاءُ

Every matter that befell the Prophets, whether hardship or ease, was praiseworthy.

لو يَمسُّ النُّضَارَ هُونٌ مِنَ النا
رِ لما اختيرَ للنُّضَارِ الصِّلاءُ

If gold were touched by disgrace from the fire, then the fire would not have been chosen for its purification.

كم يَدٍ عن نَبِيِّهِ كَفَّهَا الل
هُ وَفي الخَلْقِ كَثْرَةٌ وَاجتراءُ

How many hands did Allah restrain from His Prophet ﷺ, despite the multitude and audacity of creation.

إذ دعا وَحْدَهُ العبادَ وَأَمْسَتْ
مِنه في كلِّ مُقلَةٍ أَقْذاءُ

When he ﷺ alone called humanity to God, and yet in every eye, there were specks of hatred towards him.

هَمَّ قومٌ بِقَتْلِهِ فأَبى السَّيْ
فُ وَفاءً وَفاءتِ الصَّفْواءُ

A people intended to kill him ﷺ, but the sword refused out of loyalty, and the clear rock yielded.

وَأبو جهلٍ إذ رأى عُنُقَ الفح
لِ إليه كأنه العنقَاءُ

And Abu Jahl, when he saw the neck of the stallion advancing towards him, it was as if it were the mythical 'Anqa.

وَاقتضَاهُ النبيُّ دَيْنُ الإِراشي
يِ وَقد سَاء بيعُهُ وَالشِّرَاءُ

And the Prophet ﷺ settled the debt of the Irashi man, though his buying and selling had gone ill.

وَرأى المصطفى أَتَاهُ بما لَمْ
يُنْجِ منه دونَ الوفاء النَّجَاءُ

And the Chosen One ﷺ saw him come with a demand from which there was no escape without fulfilling the promise.

هوَ ما قد رآهُ مِن قبلُ لكنْ
ما عَلَى مِثْلِهِ يُعَدُّ الخَطَاءُ

It is what he ﷺ had seen before, yet no error is counted against one like him.

وَأَعَدَّتْ حَمَّالَةُ الحَطَبِ الفِه
رَ وَجَاءَتْ كأَنها الوَرْقاءُ

And the carrier of firewood prepared the stone and came forth as if she were a furious pigeon.

يومَ جاءَت غَضْبَى تقولُ أفي مِث
لِيَ مِنْ أحمدٍ يُقالُ الهِجَاءُ

The day she came in anger, saying, "Is satire spoken about one like me by Ahmad ﷺ?"

وَتَولَّتْ وَمَا رأته وَمِنْ أَيْ
نَ تَرَى الشمسَ مُقْلَةٌ عمياءُ

And she turned away, having not seen him ﷺ, for how can a blind eye behold the sun?

ثم سَمّتْ له اليهوديَّةُ الشَا
ةَ وَكم سَامَ الشِّقْوَةَ الأَشقِيَاءُ

Then the Jewish woman poisoned the sheep for him ﷺ, and how much misery do the wretched inflict upon others?

فأَذاعَ الذِّراعُ مَا فيه مَن شر
رٍ بِنُطْقٍ إخفاؤُهُ إبداءُ

So the foreleg revealed the evil within it with a speech whose concealment was a revelation.

وَبِخُلقٍ مِنَ النبيِّ كريمٍ
لَمْ تُقَاصَصْ بِجرحهَا العَجْماءُ

And with a noble character from the Prophet ﷺ, the one who caused the injury was not retaliated against.

مَنَّ فَضْلاً عَلَى هَوَازِنَ إذْ كا
نَ له قبلَ ذَاكَ فيهِمِ رِبَاءُ

He ﷺ bestowed favor upon Hawazin, even though he had a prior claim of kinship among them.

وَأتى السَّبيُ فيه أُختُ رَضَاعٍ
وَضَعَ الكُفْرُ قَدْرَهَا وَالسِّبَاءُ

And among the captives came a foster sister, whose status had been lowered by disbelief and captivity.

فَحَبَاهَا بِرّاً تَوَهَّمَتِ النَّا
سُ به أنَّما السِّبَاء هِداءُ

So he ﷺ bestowed such kindness upon her that people imagined captivity itself to be a gift.

بَسَطَ المصطفى لها مِن رِداءٍ
أيُّ فضل حَوَاهُ ذاكَ الرِّداءُ

The Chosen One ﷺ spread out his cloak for her, and what immense virtue did that cloak contain!

فَغَدَتْ فيه وَهْيَ سيِّدةُ النِّسْ
وَةِ وَالسيِّدَاتُ فيه إمَاءُ

So she became, within it, the mistress of all women, while all other noble ladies were but handmaidens in comparison.

فتَنَزَّهْ في ذاتِه وَمَعَانيهِ
استماعاً إنْ عَزَّ مِنهَا اجتِلاءُ

So revel in his essence and his meanings by listening, if direct beholding of them is difficult.

وَاملأ السّمْعَ مِن محَاسِنَ يُمْلِي
هَا عليك الإنشَادُ وَالإِنْشَاءُ

And fill your ears with the virtues that recitation and composition dictate to you.

كلُّ وَصْفٍ له ابْتَدَأتَ به استَوْ
عَبَ أخبَارَ الفضلِ مِنه ابتداءُ

Every description of him with which you begin encompasses the narratives of all virtue from its very beginning.

سَيِّدٌ ضِحْكُهُ التَّبَسُّمُ وَالْمَش
يُ الهَوَيْنَا وَنَومُهُ الإِغفاءُ

He is a master whose laughter is but a smile, whose walk is gentle, and whose sleep is a light slumber.

مَا سِوَى خُلْقِهِ النسيمُ وَلا غَيْ
رَ مُحَيَّاهُ الرَّوْضَةُ الغَنَّاءُ

Nothing but his character is the gentle breeze, and nothing but his countenance is the lush garden.

رحمةٌ كلُّهُ وَحَزْمٌ وَعَزْمٌ
وَوَقَارٌ وَعِصْمَةٌ وَحَيَاءُ

He is entirely mercy, firmness, resolve, dignity, infallibility, and modesty.

لا تَحُلُّ البأْسَاء مِنه عُرَا الصَّبْ
رِ وَلا تَسْتَخِفُّهُ السَّرَّاءُ

Adversity does not loosen the bonds of patience within him, nor does prosperity make him frivolous.

كَرُمَتْ نَفْسُهُ فما يخْطُرُ السُّو
ء عَلَى قَلْبِهِ وَلا الفحشَاءُ

His soul is so noble that evil never crosses his heart, nor does indecency.

عَظُمَتْ نِعْمَةُ الإِله عليه
فاستَقَلَّتْ لِذِكْرِهِ العُظَمَاءُ

The grace of God upon him was immense, so in his remembrance, all great ones seemed insignificant.

جَهِلَتْ قومُهُ عليه فأَغْضَى
وَأخو الحِلْم دَأبُهُ الإِغْضَاءُ

His people acted ignorantly towards him, yet he overlooked it, for it is the habit of the forbearing to overlook.

وَسِعَ العَالَمِين عِلْمَاً وَحِلْمَاً
فهْوَ بحرٌ لم تُعْيِهِ الأَعبَاءُ

He encompassed all worlds with knowledge and forbearance, for he is an ocean that burdens do not weary.

مُسْتَقِلٌّ دُنْيَاكَ أن يُنْسَبَ الإِم
ساكُ منها إليه والإِعطاءُ

Your worldly possessions are too insignificant for him to be associated with either withholding or giving from them.

شمسُ فضلٍ تَحَقَّقَ الظنُّ فيه
أنه الشمسُ رِفْعَةً والضِّياءُ

He is a sun of virtue, in whom the conjecture was confirmed that he is the sun in loftiness and radiance.

فإذا ما ضحا محا نورُه الظِّل
لَ وقد أثْبَتَ الظِّلالَ الضَّحَاءُ

So when he shone, his light erased the shadow, even though the morning light usually establishes shadows.

فكأنَّ الغمامةَ استَوْدَعَتْهُ
مَنْ أظَلَّتْ مَنْ ظِلِّهِ الدُّفَفَاءُ

It is as if the cloud entrusted to him the coolness of the shade it cast, a shade that itself was derived from his own.

خَفِيَتْ عِنْدَهُ الفضائلُ وانجا
بَتْ به عن عقولِنَا الأهواءُ

In his presence, all other virtues became hidden, and through him, whims and desires were dispelled from our minds.

أمَعَ الصُّبحِ للنجومِ تَجَلٍّ
أمْ مع الشمسِ للظلامِ بَقاءُ

Can stars shine forth with the dawn, or can darkness remain with the sun?

مُعجزُ القَوْلِ والفِعَالِ كريمُ ال
خلقِ وَالخُلْقِ مُقْسِطٌ مِعْطاءُ

He is miraculous in speech and deeds, noble in physical form and character, just and munificent.

لا تَقِسْ بالنبيِّ في الفضل خَلْقَاً
فهو البحر والأنامُ إضاءُ

Do not compare any creation to the Prophet ﷺ in excellence, for he is the ocean while all other beings are but its reflections.

كلُّ فضل في العالَمين فمن فَض
لِ النبيِّ استعارَهُ الفُضَلاءُ

Every excellence found in all the worlds was borrowed by the excellent ones from the Prophet's ﷺ own excellence.

شُقَّ عَنْ صَدْرِهِ وشُقَّ لَهُ البَدْ
رُ وَمِنْ شَرْطِ كلِّ شَرْطٍ جَزاءُ

His chest was split open, and the full moon was split for him, for every such sign is a divine decree.

ورَمَى بالحَصَى فأَقْصَدَ جَيشاً
ما العَصَا عِنْدَه وَمَا الإِلقاءُ

He threw pebbles, striking down an army, making Moses' staff and its throwing seem insignificant in comparison.

ودعا للأنامِ إذ دَهَمَتْهُم
سَنَةٌ مِنْ مُحولِها شَهْباءُ

And he prayed for the people when they were afflicted by a year of severe, barren drought.

فاسْتَهَلّتْ بالغَيْثِ سَبْعَةَ أَيَّا
مٍ عليهم سحابةٌ وَطْفاءُ

So a heavy, dark cloud rained upon them for seven days.

تَتَحَرّى مَواضِعَ الرَّعْيِ وَالسَّقْ
يِ وحيث العِطاشُ تُوهَى السِّقاءُ

It sought out places of pasture and watering, and where the thirsty were, it poured forth water abundantly.

وأتى الناسُ يَشْتَكُونَ أذاها
وَرَخَاءٌ يُؤْذِي الأنام غلاءُ

And people came complaining of its harm, for even abundance can harm humanity through its excess.

فدعا فانجلى الغمام فقلت في
وصف غيث إِقْلاعَه استسقاءُ

So he prayed, and the clouds cleared, making me say that the cessation of such rain was itself a prayer for rain.

ثم أَثْرى الثَّرَى فقرَّتْ عُيونٌ
بقُراهَا وَأُحْيِيَتْ أَحْيَاءُ

Then the earth became fertile, delighting eyes with its flourishing settlements, and living beings were revived.

فترى الأرضَ غِبَّهُ كسماءٍ
أشْرَقَتْ مِنْ نُجومِهَا الظَّلْمَاءُ

So you would see the earth after it like a sky whose darkness is illuminated by its stars.

تُخْجِلُ الدُّرَّ واليواقيتَ من نَوْ
رِ رُباها البَيْضَاءُ والحَمراءُ

The white and red blossoms of its hills shamed pearls and rubies.

لَيْتَهُ خَصَّنِي بِرُؤْيَةِ وَجْهٍ
زَالَ عن كلِّ من رآه الشّقاءُ

Would that he ﷺ had favored me with a glimpse of a face from which all misery departed from everyone who saw it.

مُسْفِرٌ يَلْتَقِي الكَتِيبَةَ بَسَّا
ماً إذا أسْهَمَ الوُجُوهَ اللِّقاءُ

Radiant, he ﷺ would meet the battalion with a smile, even when the encounter made other faces grim.

جُعِلَتْ مَسْجِدَاً له الأرضُ فاهْتز
زَ به للصلاةِ فيها حِرَاءُ

The earth was made a mosque for him ﷺ, so Hira itself trembled with joy for prayer upon it.

مُظْهِرٍ شَجّةَ الْجَبِينِ عَلَى البُرْ
ءِ كما أَظهرَ الهلالَ البَرَاءُ

He ﷺ showed the scar on his forehead even after healing, just as the new moon reveals its slender form.

سُتِرَ الحُسْنُ منه بالحسنِ فاعجَبْ
لِجَمِالٍ له الْجَمالُ وِقاءُ

His beauty ﷺ was veiled by beauty, so marvel at a beauty for which beauty itself serves as a shield.

فهْوَ كالزّهْرِ لاحَ من سَجَفِ الأك
مام والعودِ شُقَّ عنه اللّحاءُ

He ﷺ is like a blossom appearing from the sheath of its buds, and like a branch from which the bark has been stripped.

كَادَ أَنْ يُغشِيَ العُيونَ سناً مِنْ
هُ لِسِرٍّ فيه حَكَتْهُ ذُكاءُ

His ﷺ radiance almost blinded eyes, due to a secret within him that the sun itself recounted.

صانَهُ الحُسْنُ وَالسّكِينَةُ أَنْ تُظ
هِرَ فيه آثارها البأساءُ

Beauty and tranquility preserved him ﷺ from showing the effects of hardship upon him.

وتَخَالُ الوجوهَ إنْ قابَلَتْه
أَلْبَسَتْهَا ألوانَهَا الحِرْبَاءُ

You would imagine that faces, upon encountering him ﷺ, would change their colors as if the chameleon had lent them its hues.

فإذا شِمْتَ بِشْرَهُ وَنَدَاهُ
أذْهَلَتْكَ الأنوارُ والأنواءُ

If you observed his ﷺ cheerfulness and generosity, the lights and bounties would utterly astound you.

أَوْ بتقبيلِ راحةٍ كانَ لل
هِ وباللَّه أخذها والعطاءُ

Or by kissing a palm ﷺ, whose every taking and giving was for Allah and by His divine will.

تَتَّقِي بأْسَها الملوكُ وَتحْظَى
بالغِنَى من نَوَالِهَا الفُقَراءُ

Kings would fear the might of that hand ﷺ, while the poor would attain wealth from its bounty.

لا تَسَلْ سَيْلَ جُودِها إنما يَك
فِيك مِنْ وكْفِ سُحْبها الأنداءُ

Do not ask about the flood of its generosity ﷺ, for the mere dew drops from its clouds are sufficient for you.

دَرَّتِ الشاةُ حينَ مرَّتْ عَلَيها
فلها ثَرْوَةٌ بها وَنَماءُ

The ewe gave milk when he ﷺ passed by it, and through him, it gained prosperity and growth.

نَبَعَ الماءُ أَثْمَرَ النخلُ في عا
مٍ بها سَبَّحَتْ بها الحصباءُ

Water gushed forth, date palms bore fruit in a single year through him ﷺ, and even pebbles glorified Allah through his presence.

أحْيَتِ المُرْمِلِينَ مِنْ مِوْتِ جَهْدٍ
أَعْوَزَ القَوْمَ فيه زادٌ وماءُ

He ﷺ revived the destitute from the death of hardship, a state in which the people lacked both provisions and water.

فتغَدَّى بالصَّاعِ أَلْفٌ جِياعٌ
وتَرَوَّى بالصَّاعِ ألفٌ ظِمَاءُ

Thus, a thousand hungry people were fed by a single Sa' of food, and a thousand thirsty people were quenched by a single Sa' of water.

وَوَفَى قدرُ بَيْضَةٍ مِنْ نُضَارٍ
دَيْنَ سَلْمَانَ حِينَ حانَ الوفاءُ

And the equivalent of an egg's weight in pure gold fulfilled Salman's debt when the time for repayment came.

كانَ يُدْعَى قِنّاً فأُعْتِقَ لَمَّا
أيْنَعَتْ مِنْ نَخيلِه الأَقْنَاءُ

He (Salman) was called a slave, but was freed when the date clusters from his palm trees ripened.

أفلا تَعْذُرُونَ سَلْمَانَ لَمَّا
أَنْ عَرَتْهُ مِنْ ذِكْرِهِ العُروَاءُ

So would you not excuse Salman when the shivers of awe seized him at the mere mention of him ﷺ?

وَأَزالَت بِلَمْسِهَا كلَّ دَاءٍ
أكْبَرَتْهُ أطِبَّةٌ وَإِسَاءُ

And by its touch, it removed every ailment that physicians and healers had deemed incurable.

وعُيُونٌ مَرَّتْ بها وَهْي رُمْدٌ
فأَرَتْهَا مَا لَمْ تَرَ الزَّرْقَاءُ

And eyes passed by it ﷺ while they were sore, yet it made them see what even the sharp-sighted could not perceive.

وأَعادَتْ عَلَى قَتَادَةَ عَيْنَاً
فَهْيَ حتى مماتِه النَّجْلاءُ

And it restored an eye to Qatadah, which remained wide and beautiful until his death.

أَوْ بِلَثْمِ التُّرَابِ مِنْ قَدَمٍ لا
نَتْ حَياءً من مَشْيِهَا الصَّفْواءُ

Or by kissing the dust from a foot ﷺ, whose very walking made the hard rock soften out of modesty.

مَوْطِئُ الأخمَصِ الَّذِي منه للقل
لبِ إذا مَضْجَعي أَقَضَّ وِطاءُ

The place where the arch of his foot ﷺ trod provides a soft resting place for the heart when my own bed becomes uncomfortable.

حَظيَ المسجدُ الحرامُ بمَمْشا
ها ولم يَنْس حَظه إِيلِيَاءُ

The Sacred Mosque was blessed by his ﷺ footsteps, and Jerusalem did not forget its share of his blessing either.

وَرَمَتْ إذْ رَمَى بها ظُلَمَ اللي
لِ إلى اللَّه خوفُه والرَّجاءُ

And his foot ﷺ dispelled the darkness of the night as he, with it, directed his fear and hope towards Allah.

دَمِيَتْ في الوَغَى لِتَكْسِبَ طِيباً
ما أراقتْ من الدَّمِ الشُّهداءُ

His foot ﷺ bled in battle to gain a fragrance that the blood shed by martyrs could not achieve.

فَهْيَ قُطْبُ المحرابِ وَالْحَرْبِ كم دا
رت عليها في طاعة أَرحاءُ

She is the axis of both the prayer niche and of war, around which many millstones have revolved in obedience.

وَأُرَاهُ لو لم يُسَكِّنْ بها قب
لُ حِراءً ماجَتْ بِهِ الدَّأْمَاءُ

And I believe that had he not settled within it (the world) before Hira, the vastness of existence would have surged in turmoil.

عَجَباً للكُفّارِ زادوا ضلالاً
بالذي فيه للعقول اهتداءُ

How astonishing are the disbelievers, who only increased in error through that which contains clear guidance for all intellects.

والذي يسألون منه كتابٌ
مُنْزَلٌ قد أتاهم وارتقاءُ

And that which they demand is a revealed Book that has already come to them, offering elevation and ascent.

أَوَ لم يَكْفِهِمْ من اللَّهِ ذِكْرٌ
فيه للناس رحمةٌ وشفاءُ

Was not a remembrance from Allah sufficient for them, in which there is mercy and healing for all humankind?

أَعجزَ الإِنسَ آية منه والجن
نَ فَهَلَّا يأتي بها البُلَغاءُ

A single verse from it has rendered both humankind and jinn helpless, so why do not the most eloquent among them produce its like?

كلّ يومٍ تُهدَى إلى سامِعِيه
مُعجِزاتٍ من لفظِه القُرَّاءُ

Every day, reciters present miracles from its very words to those who listen.

تَتَحَلَّى به المسامِعُ والأف
واه فَهْو الحُلِيُّ وَالحَلْوَاءُ

The ears and mouths are adorned by it, for it is both the ornament and the sweet delight.

رَقَّ لَفْظاً وراق معنىً فجاءَتْ
في حُلاها وحَلْيِها الخَنْسَاءُ

Delicate in wording and sublime in meaning, it came forth in its beauty and adornment like the poetry of Al-Khansa'.

وأرَتْنَا فيه غوامضَ فضلٍ
رِقَّةٌ مِنْ زُلالِهَا وَصَفاءُ

And it revealed to us within it profound excellences, a delicacy stemming from its pure, clear essence and purity.

إنما تُجْتَلَى الوُجُوهُ إذَا ما
جُلِيَتْ عِنْ مِرْآتِهَا الأصْداءُ

Faces are only truly revealed when the tarnish is polished away from their mirrors.

سُوَرٌ منه أشْبَهَتْ صُوَراً مِن
نَا ومِثْلُ النَّظَائِر النُّظَراءُ

Chapters from it resembled forms from us, and indeed, equals are compared to equals.

والأقاويل عندَهمْ كالتماثي
لِ فلا يُوهِمَنَّكَ الخطباءُ

And their sayings are like lifeless statues, so let not the orators deceive you.

كم أبانَتْ آياتُهُ من علومٍ
عن حُروفٍ أبانَ عنها الهجاءُ

How many sciences its verses have revealed from mere letters, which articulation has made manifest.

فهْي كالحَبِّ والنَّوَى أعجبَ الزُّر
راعَ منهُ سنابلٌ وَزَكاءُ

So it is like the grain and the date stone, from which ears of corn and abundant growth have astonished the farmers.

فأطالوا فيه التردُّدَ وَالرَّي
بَ فقالوا سِحْرٌ وقالوا افتراءُ

So they prolonged their hesitation and doubt concerning it, saying, "It is magic," and "It is a fabrication."

وإذا البيِّنَاتُ لَمْ تُغْنِ شيئاً
فَالتماسُ الهُدَى بِهِنَّ عَناءُ

And if clear proofs avail nothing, then seeking guidance through them is a futile effort.

وإذا ضلَّتِ العُقول على عِلْ
مٍ فماذا تقوله الفُّصَحاءُ

And if intellects go astray despite knowledge, then what more can the eloquent ones possibly say?

قومَ عيسى عاملْتم قومَ موسى
بالذي عامَلَتْكُم الحُنفاءُ

O people of Jesus, you treated the people of Moses with the same manner in which the true monotheists treated you.

صَدَّقوا كُتْبَكُمُ وكذَبْتُمْ
كُتبَهُمُ إنّ ذا لَبِئْسَ البَواءُ

They (the true monotheists) believed in your books, yet you disbelieved in theirs; indeed, that is a wretched recompense.

لو جحدنا جُحُودَكم لاستويْنَا
أوَ للحقِّ بالضَّلالِ استواءُ

If we were to deny as you deny, we would become equal, but can there truly be equality between truth and error?

مَا لَكُم إِخْوَةَ الكِتابِ أُناساً
ليس يُرْعَى للحقِّ منكم إخاءُ

What ails you, O People of the Book, that you are a people for whom no bond of brotherhood is upheld for the sake of truth?

يَحْسُدُ الأولُ الأخيرَ وما زا
لَ كذا المُحْدَثُونَ وَالقُدَمَاءُ

The first envies the last, and it has ever been thus with both the new and the old generations.

قد عَلِمْتُم بِظلمِ قابيل هابي
لَ ومظلومُ الإِخْوَةِ الأَتْقِيَاءُ

You have surely known of Cain's injustice to Abel, and of the oppressed among pious brothers.

وسمِعْتم بكَيْدِ أَبناءِ يعقو
بَ أَخَاهم وكلُّهم صُلَحَاءُ

And you have heard of the plot of Jacob's sons against their brother, even though all of them were righteous.

حِينَ أَلْقَوْهُ في غَيابَةِ جُبٍّ
وَرَمَوْهُ بالإفْكِ وَهْوَ بَراءُ

When they cast him into the hidden depths of a well and falsely accused him, though he was innocent.

فتأَسَّوْا بِمَن مَضَى إذْ ظَلَمتمْ
فالتَّأَسِّي لِلنَّفْسِ فيه عَزَاءُ

So take solace in those who came before, since you have committed injustice, for in such solace, the soul finds comfort.

أتُرَاكُم وَفَّيْتُم حينَ خَانُوا
أم تُرَاكُمْ أَحْسَنْتُمُ إذْ أساؤُوا

Do you imagine you were faithful when they betrayed, or that you acted righteously when they committed evil?

بَلْ تَمَادَتْ عَلَى التَّجَاهُلِ آبَا
ءٌ تَقَفَّتْ آثَارِهَا الأَبناءُ

Rather, fathers persisted in ignorance, and their children followed in their footsteps.

بَيَّنَتْهُ تَوْراتُهُمْ وَالأَناجِي
لُ وَهم في جُحُودِهِ شُرَكاءُ

Their Torahs and Gospels made him ﷺ clear, yet they are partners in denying him.

إنْ تقولوا ما بَيَّنَتْهُ فما زَا
لَتْ بها عن عيونهم غشوَاءُ

If you claim they did not make him ﷺ clear, then a veil has always obscured him from their eyes.

أو تقولوا قد بَيَّنَتْهُ فما لِلْ
أُذْنِ عما تقوله صَمَّاءُ

Or if you claim they did make him ﷺ clear, then why is the ear deaf to what it proclaims?

عَرَفُوهُ وَأنْكَرَوهُ وَظُلمَاً
كَتَمَتْهُ الشَّهَادَةَ الشُّهَدَاءُ

They recognized him ﷺ and then denied him, and unjustly did the witnesses conceal the testimony.

أوَ نُورُ الإِلهِ تُطْفِئُهُ الأَفْ
واهُ وَهْوَ الذي به يُسْتَضاءُ

Can the light of God be extinguished by mere mouths, when it is by this very light that all are illuminated?

أوَلا يُنْكِرُونَ مَن طَحَنَتْهُم
بِرَحاها عِنْ أمْرِهِ الْهَيجاءُ

Do they not deny him ﷺ who crushed them with the millstone of war at his command?

وَكَساهم ثَوْبَ الصَّغارِ وقد
طُلَّت دِماً منهم وصِينَتْ دِمَاءُ

And clothed them in the garment of humiliation, while blood was shed from them and other blood was spared.

كيف يَهدِي الإِله منهم قلوباً
حَشْوُها من حَبِيبِهِ الْبَغْضاءُ

How can God guide hearts among them whose very core is filled with hatred for His beloved ﷺ?

خَبِّرونَا أهلَ الكِتَابَيْنِ من أَيْ
نَ أَتَاكُم تَثْليثكم والبَداءُ

Tell us, O People of the Two Books, from where did your Trinity and the concept of "Bada'" (change in divine will) come to you?

مَا أتى بالعقِيدَتَيْنِ كتابٌ
واعتقادٌ لا نَصَّ فيه ادِّعاءُ

No divine book ever brought these two doctrines, and any belief without a scriptural text is a mere claim.

والدَّعاوَى ما لم تُقيموا عليها
بَيِّنَاتٍ أبناؤُها أَدْعِياءُ

And claims, unless you establish them with clear proofs, their offspring are illegitimate.

ليت شعري ذِكرُ الثلاثةِ وَالوا
حِدِ نَقْصٌ في عَدِّكم أمْ نَماءُ

I wonder if the mention of the three and the one constitutes a deficiency in your reckoning or an augmentation.

كيف وَحَّدْتُم إِلهاً نَفَى التَّو
حِيدَ عنه الآباءُ والأَبناءُ

How did you unify a God from whom both fathers and sons denied the very concept of unity?

أإِلهٌ مُرَكَّبٌ ما سَمِعْنَا
بإِلهٍ لذاتِهِ أَجْزَاءُ

Is He a composite god, for we have never heard of a deity whose essence comprises distinct parts?

أَلِكُلٍّ منهم نَصِيبٌ مِنَ المُل
كِ فَهَلَّا تَمَيَّزُ الأَنْصِبَاءُ

Does each of them possess a share in the dominion, and if so, why are these shares not clearly distinguished?

أم هُمُ حَلّلوُا بها شِرْكَةَ الأب
دَانِ أمْ هُمْ لبعضِهم كُفَلاءُ

Or have they permitted through it a partnership of bodies, or do they stand as guarantors for one another?

أتراهم لحاجةٍ واضطرارٍ
خَلَطُوهَا ومَا بَغَى الخُلَطَاءُ

Do you imagine they mingled it out of need and compulsion, and that the mixers committed no transgression?

أهُوَ الرَّاكِبُ الحمارَ فيا عَجْ
زَ إِلهٍ يَمَسُّهُ الإِعْيَاءُ

Is He the one who rode the donkey, for what weakness afflicts a god whom weariness can touch?

أمْ جميعٌ عَلَى الحمار لقد جَل
لَ حِمَارٌ بِجَمْعِهِم مَشَّاءُ

Or are all of them upon the donkey; truly, a donkey that walks bearing all of them is indeed mighty!

أم سِواهم هُو الإِلهُ فما نِسْ
بَةُ عيسى إليه والإِنْتِمَاءُ

Or is someone other than them the true God, and if so, what then is the relation and belonging of Jesus to Him?

أم أردتُم بها الصفاتِ فلمْ خُص
صَتْ ثُلاثٌ بِوصفِه وَثُناءُ

Or did you intend by it the divine attributes, and if so, why were only three singled out for His description and praise?

أم هُو ابنٌ للَّه ما شاركته
في معاني النُّبُوَّةِ الأَنبياءُ

Or is He a son of God, whom the prophets did not share in the profound meanings of prophethood?

قتلَتْهُ اليهودُ فيما زَعَمْتُم
وَلأَمْواتِكم به إحياءُ

The Jews killed Him, as you claim, yet through Him, there is resurrection for your dead.

إنَّ قَوْلاً أَطْلَقْتُمُوهُ عَلَى الل
هِ تعالى ذِكْرا لقَوْلٌ هُراءُ

Indeed, a statement you have uttered concerning God, exalted be His remembrance, is nothing but utter nonsense.

مِثْلَ مَا قَالَت اليهودُ وكلٌّ
لَزِمَتْهُ مقالَةٌ شَنعاءُ

It is like what the Jews said, and each of them is bound by an abominable saying.

إذْ همُ اسْتَقْرَؤُوا البَداءَ وكم سا
قَ وَبَالاً إِليهم اسْتِقْرَاءُ

For they inferred change in God's will, and how much calamity such inference brought upon them!

وَأَرَاهم لم يجعلُوا الواحِدَ القَه
هارَ في الخَلْقِ فاعلاً ما يشاءُ

And I see that they did not consider the One, the Dominant, as the doer of whatever He wills in creation.

جَوَّزُوا النَّسْخَ مِثْلَما جوَّزُوا المس
خَ عَلَيْهِم لو أنهم فُقهاءُ

They permitted abrogation just as they permitted transformation upon themselves, if only they were true jurists.

هُوَ إِلَّا أَن يُرْفَعَ الحكمُ بالحك
مِ وخَلْقٌ فيه وأمرٌ سَواءُ

It is nothing but that a ruling is lifted by another ruling, and in this, creation and command are equally subject to His will.

ولحُكمٍ من الزمانِ انتهاءٌ
ولحُكم من الزمانِ ابتداءُ

For a ruling from time, there is an end, and for a ruling from time, there is a beginning.

فَسَلُوهم أكان في مسخِهِم نَسْ
خٌ لآيات اللَّه أم إنشاءُ

So ask them: was their transformation an abrogation of God's verses or a new creation?

وَبَدَاءٌ في قَوْلِهمْ نَدِمَ الل
هُ عَلَى خَلْقِ آدمٍ أمْ خَطاءُ

Is it a change of mind in their assertion that God regretted the creation of Adam, or is it merely an error?

أم مَحَا اللَّهُ آية الليل ذكراً
بعدَ سَهْوٍ ليوجَدَ الإِمْساءُ

Or did God erase the sign of night from memory after a lapse, so that the evening might come into being?

أم بدا للإِلهِ في ذَبْحِ إِسْحَا
قَ وقد كان الأمر فيه مَضاءُ

Or did it become apparent to God regarding the sacrifice of Isaac, when the command concerning it had already been decisively issued?

أوَ ما حَرَّمَ الإِلهُ نِكَاحَ ال
أُختِ بعدَ التحليلِ فَهْوَ الزِّناءُ

Or did God forbid marriage to a sister after it had been permitted, thereby rendering it fornication?

لا تُكَذِّبْ إنَّ اليَهُودَ وقد زا
غُوا عن الحقِّ مَعْشَرٌ لُؤَماءُ

Do not disbelieve, for the Jews, having strayed from the truth, are indeed a despicable folk.

جَحَدُوا المصطفى وآمن بالطا
غُوتِ قومٌ همْ عندهمْ شُرَفاءُ

They denied the Chosen One ﷺ, while believing in idols, a people whom they themselves deem honorable.

قتَلوا الأَنبياءَ وَاتَّخَذُوا العِج
لَ أَلا إنهم هم السُّفَهاءُ

They murdered the prophets and adopted the calf (for worship); verily, they are the truly foolish ones.

وسَفيهٌ من ساءَه المنُّ والسَّلْ
وَى وأَرضاهُ الفُومُ وَالقِثَّاءُ

And foolish is he whom manna and quails displeased, yet garlic and cucumbers brought contentment.

مُلِئَتْ بالخبيثِ منهم بُطُونٌ
فَهْيَ نَارٌ طِباقُها الأمعاءُ

Their bellies were filled with wickedness, so they are a fire whose layers are their very intestines.

لو أُرِيدُوا في حال سَبْتٍ بخيرٍ
كان سَبْتَاً لديهمُ الأَربِعاءُ

Had they been intended for good on a Sabbath, then Wednesday would have been their designated Sabbath.

هُوَ يومٌ مُبارَكٌ قيلَ للتص
ريفِ فيه من اليهود اعتداءُ

It is a blessed day, yet it was said that the Jews committed transgression in its observance.

فَبِظُلْمٍ منهمُ وكفْرٍ عَدَتْهُم
طَيِّبَاتٌ في تَرْكِهنَّ ابْتِلاءُ

Thus, due to their injustice and disbelief, good things were denied to them, and in their abandonment lay a severe trial.

خُدِعوا بالمنافقين وهل يَنْ
فُقُ إلَّا على السفيهِ الشَّقاءُ

They were deceived by the hypocrites, for does misery ever befall anyone but the foolish?

واطمأنوا بقَوْلِ الَاحزاب إِخوا
نِهِمُ إِننا لكم أولياءُ

And they found reassurance in the words of their brethren, the confederates, who declared, "Indeed, we are your allies."

حالَفوهم وخالفوهم ولمْ أَدْ
رِ لماذا تخالَفَ الحُلفاءُ

They formed alliances with them and then opposed them, and I know not why the allies themselves fell into disagreement.

أسلَمُوهم لأَوَّلِ الحَشْرِ لا مِي
عادُهم صادقٌ ولا الإِيلاءُ

They abandoned them at the first gathering, for neither their promise was true nor their oath binding.

سكَنَ الرُّعْبُ والخَرابُ قلوباً
وبُيُوتاً منهمُ نعاها الجَلاءُ

Terror and ruin settled in their hearts and homes, which their very expulsion lamented.

وَبِيَوْمِ الأحزابِ إِذْ زاغتِ الأَب
صَارُ فيهم وضلتِ الآراءُ

And on the Day of the Confederates, when eyes were diverted among them and all opinions went astray.

وتَعَدَّوْا إلى النبيّ حدوداً
كان فيها عليهم العُدَوَاءُ

And they transgressed against the Prophet ﷺ, crossing boundaries that brought hostility upon themselves.

وَنَهَتْهُم وما انتهت عنه قوم
فأُبيدَ الأَمَّارُ والنَّهاءُ

And He forbade them, yet a people did not desist from it, so both the one who commanded and the one who was commanded were utterly destroyed.

وتعاطَوْا في أحمدٍ مُنْكَرَ القَوْ
لِ وَنُطقُ الأَراذِلِ العَوْراءُ

They engaged in evil speech against Ahmad ﷺ, for the utterance of the vile is inherently corrupt and blind.

كلُّ رِجْسٍ يَزِيدُه الخُلُقُ السُّو
ءُ سِفاهاً والمِلَّةُ العَوْجاءُ

Every vile person is only increased in foolishness by their bad character and their crooked religion.

فانظروا كيف كان عاقبة القوْ
مِ وَما ساق لِلْبَذِيِّ البَذَاءُ

So observe what became of that people and to what end their obscenity led the foul-mouthed.

وجَد السَّبَّ فيه سُمَّاً وَلم يَدْ
رِ إِذْ المِيمُ في مواضِعَ بَاءُ

He found the insult against him ﷺ to be poison, not realizing that the 'meem' in 'summun' (poison) in certain contexts transforms into a 'ba' (in 'sabbun' - insult), thus the insult itself became poison to the speaker.

كانَ مِن فيه قتلُه بِيَدَيْهِ
فهو في سوء فِعله الزَّبَّاءُ

His own mouth was the instrument of his demise by his own hands, making him, in the evil of his deed, like Az-Zabba'.

أوْ هُوَ النحلُ قَرْصُهَا يَجْلُبُ الحَت
فَ إليها وما له إنْكَاءُ

Or he is like the bee whose sting brings death upon itself, yet it inflicts no lasting harm upon its target.

صَرَعَتْ قومَهُ حبائِلُ بَغْيٍ
مَدَّها المكرُ منهم والدَّهاءُ

The snares of injustice, which their own cunning and deceit had laid, brought down his people.

فأتتهم خيلٌ إلى الحرب تختا
لُ وللخيْلِ في الوغَى خُيَلاءُ

Then horses came to them for war, prancing proudly, for horses possess a natural arrogance in battle.

قَصَدَتْ فيهم القنا فقَوافِي ال
طعْنِ منها ما شأنها الإيطاءُ

The spears targeted them, and the 'rhymes' of their thrusts were not concerned with repetition, striking decisively.

وأثَارَتْ بأرضِ مكةَ نَقْعَاً
ظُنَّ أن الغُدُوَّ منها عِشاءُ

And they raised such a cloud of dust in the land of Mecca that the morning was mistaken for evening.

أحْجَمَتْ عندهُ الحجُون وأكْدى
عِنْد إعطائه القليلَ كَدَاءُ

Before him ﷺ, even the rugged mountains seemed to recede, and barrenness itself yielded fruit when he ﷺ bestowed even a trifle.

وَدَهَتْ أَوْجُهاً بها وبيوتاً
مُلّ منها الإكفاءُ والإقواءُ

And it struck faces and homes there, so relentlessly that even the poetic flaws of 'ikfa' and 'iqwa' would be wearied by its description.

فَدَعَوْا أحْلَمَ البريَّةِ والعفْ
وُ جوابُ الحليمِ والإغْضاءُ

So they called upon the most forbearing of all creation ﷺ, for forgiveness and overlooking are the natural responses of the truly forbearing.

ناشدوه القُرْبَى التي من قُرَيْش
قطعَتْهَا التِّراتُ والشَّحْناءُ

They implored him ﷺ by the kinship of Quraysh, a bond that feuds and animosity had long since severed.

فعَفا عَفْوَ قَادرٍ لم يُنَغِّصْ
هُ عليهم بما مضى إغراءُ

So he ﷺ forgave with the forgiveness of one who holds power, a forgiveness not tainted by any incitement from past grievances against them.

وإذا كان القطْع وَالوصلُ لل
هِ تَسَاوَى التَّقْرِيبُ وَالإِقْصاءُ

And when both severing and joining relationships are undertaken solely for the sake of God, then drawing near and keeping afar become equally significant.

وسواءٌ عليه فيما أتاهُ
مِنْ سِواهُ المَلامُ وَالإطْراءُ

And it was all the same to him ﷺ, regarding what came to him from others, whether it was blame or praise.

وَلَو انَّ انتقامَهُ لِهَوَى النَّف
سِ لَدَامَتْ قطيعةٌ وَجَفَاءُ

And if his ﷺ vengeance had been driven by personal desire, then estrangement and harshness would have endured indefinitely.

قام للَّه في الأُمورِ فأَرْضَى ال
لهَ منه تَبايُنٌ وَوَفاءُ

He ﷺ stood for God in all matters, and thus God was pleased with his ﷺ unique distinction and unwavering faithfulness.

فِعْلُهُ كلُّهُ جَمِيلٌ وَهل يَنْ
صَحُ إلّا بمَا حَوَاهُ الإناءُ

All his ﷺ actions are beautiful, for does a vessel pour out anything other than what it contains?

أطْربَ السامعينَ ذِكْرُ عُلاهُ
يا لَرَاحٍ مَالَتْ بهَا النُّدَماءُ

The remembrance of his ﷺ exaltedness enraptures the listeners, akin to the intoxicating joy that makes companions sway.

النبيُّ الأميُّ أعلمُ مَنْ أس
نَدَ عنه الرُّوَاةُ وَالحكَماءُ

The unlettered Prophet ﷺ is the most knowledgeable of all from whom narrators and sages have transmitted knowledge.

وَعَدَتْنِي ازْدِيَارَهُ العامَ وَجْنا
ءٌ وَمَنَّتْ بِوَعْدِها الوجْناءُ

A swift she-camel promised me a visit to him ﷺ this year, and that strong mount fulfilled her pledge.

أفلا أنْطَوِي لها في اقْتضائِي
ه لِتُطْوَى ما بَيْنَنا الأَفْلاءُ

Should I not then hasten for her in fulfilling that journey, so that the vast deserts between us may be swiftly traversed?

بألُوفِ البَطْحاءِ يُجْفِلُهَا النِّي
لُ وقد شَفَّ جَوْفَهَا الإِظْماءُ

Thousands of valley-camels, driven by the Nile, have their bellies emaciated by thirst.

أنْكَرَتْ مِصْرَ فَهيَ تَنْفِرُ ما لا
حَ بِنَاءٌ لِعَيْنِهَا أوْ خَلاءُ

She (the she-camel) disowned Egypt, shying away from any structure or open expanse that appeared before her eyes.

فأَقَضّتْ عَلَى مبَارِكها بِرْ
كَتهَا فالبُّوَيْبُ فالخَضْراءُ

Thus, she passed her resting places at Birket, then Buwayb, and then Al-Khadra'.

فالقِبَابُ التي تَلِيها فبِئْرُ ال
نخْلِ وَالرَّكْبُ قائِلُونَ رِوَاءُ

Then the domes that follow, then Bir al-Nakhl, where the riders rest, their thirst quenched.

وَغَدَتْ أَيْلَةُ وَحِقْلٌ وَقُرٌّ
خَلْفَها فَالمَغَارَةُ الفَيْحَاءُ

And Ayla, Hiql, and Qurr were left behind her, followed by the spacious cave.

فعيونُ الأَقْصَابِ يَتبعُها النَّب
كُ وَيتْلو كُفَافَةَ العَوْجاءُ

Then the springs of Al-Aqsab, followed by Al-Nabk, and then Kafafat al-Awja'.

حاوَرَتْهَا الحوراءُ شَوْقاً فينبو
عٌ فَرَقَّ اليَنْبُوعُ وَالْحَوْراءُ

The fair-eyed one conversed with her (the camel) out of longing, then Yanbu', where both the spring and the fair-eyed one became tender.

لاحَ بالدَّهْنَوَيْنِ بَدْرٌ لها بَع
دَ حُنَيْنٍ وَحَنَّتِ الصَّفْرَاءُ

A full moon appeared to her at Al-Dahna'ayn after Hunayn, and Al-Safra' yearned.

ونَضَتْ بَزْوَةٌ فرابغُ فالجُحْ
فَةُ عنها ما حاكه الإِنضاءُ

And Bazwa, then Rabigh, then Al-Juhfa were left behind her, along with the weariness that had afflicted her.

وأرَتْهَا الخَلاصَ بئْرُ عَليٍّ
فَعِقَابُ السَّوِيقِ فالخَلصاءُ

And Bir Ali showed her the end of the journey, then Iqab al-Sawīq, then Al-Khalsa'.

فهْيَ من ماء بئْرِ عُسفَانَ أو مِنْ
بَطْنِ مَرٍّ ظمآنةٌ خَمْصَاءُ

Thus, she is from the water of Bir Usfan, or from the valley of Marr, still thirsty and emaciated.

قَرَّبَ الزَّاهِرَ المساجِدُ منها
بخُطاها فالبُطءُ منها وَحاءُ

The mosques brought Al-Zahir closer to her with her steps, making any slowness from her a burden.

هذه عِدَّةُ المنازلِ لا ما
عدَّ فيه السّماكُ وَالعَوَّاءُ

These are the true count of the journey's stations, not those enumerated by Al-Simak and Al-Awwa' (celestial bodies).

فكأَني بها أُرَحِّلُ منْ مَك
كَةَ شمساً سماؤُها البَيْداءُ

It is as if I am departing from Mecca with her, a sun whose sky is the vast desert.

مَوْضِعُ البَيْتِ مَهْبِطُ الوَحْي مأْوى ال
رسلِ حيثُ الأنوارُ حيثُ البَهاءُ

It is the place of the House, the descent of revelation, the refuge of the Messengers, where lights and splendor abound.

حيثُ فرضُ الطَّوَافِ والسَّعْيُ وَالحل
قُ وَرَمْيُ الجِمار وَالإِهداءُ

Where circumambulation, the ritual running, shaving, the stoning of the pillars, and the offering of sacrifices are all obligatory.

حَبَّذا حَبَّذَا معاهِدُ منها
لم يُغَيِّرْ آياتِهِنَّ البِلاءُ

How excellent, how excellent are those sacred sites whose signs adversity has not altered.

حَرَمٌ آمِن وَبَيْتٌ حَرامٌ
وَمَقَامٌ فيه المُقامُ تَلاءُ

It is a safe sanctuary and a sacred house, and a station where dwelling itself is a glory.

فَقَضَيْنَا بها مَناسِكَ لا يُح
مَدُ إلّا في فِعْلِهِنَّ القضاءُ

So we performed there rituals whose divine decree is only praised through their actual performance.

وَرَمَيْنَا بها الفِجَاجَ إلَى طَيْ
بَةَ والسَّيْرُ بالمطايا رِماءُ

And with them we traversed the wide paths towards Taybah, our journey by mounts swift as shooting arrows.

فأصَبْنا عَنْ قَوْسِها غَرضَ القُر
بِ وَنِعْمَ الخَبِيئَةُ الكَوْمَاءُ

So from its bow we hit the target of proximity, and how excellent was the plump camel, our hidden treasure for the journey.

فرأينا أرضَ الحَبيبِ يَغُضُّ ال
طرفَ منها الضياءُ وَالْلأْلاءُ

Then we saw the land of the Beloved ﷺ, from which light and brilliance themselves lower their gaze in reverence.

فكأنَّ البَيْدَاءَ مِنْ حيثُما قا
بَلَتِ العَينَ رَوْضَة غَنَّاءُ

So it was as if the desert, wherever the eye met it, transformed into a lush, vibrant garden.

وكأَنَّ البِقاعَ زَرَّتْ عليها
طَرَفَيْها مُلاءَةٌ حَمْرَاءُ

And it was as if the regions were adorned, their two ends fastened by a crimson cloak.

وكأَنَّ الأَرجاء تَنشُر نَشْر ال
مِسْكِ فيها الجَنُوبُ وَالجِرْبِياءُ

And it was as if the surroundings, with the south and north-west winds, diffused the fragrance of musk throughout them.

فإذا شِمتَ أو شَمِمْتَ رُبَاها
لاحَ منها برقٌ وفاحَ كِباءُ

So if you gazed upon or smelled its high grounds, lightning flashed from it and a sweet aroma wafted forth.

أيَّ نُورٍ وَأيَّ نَوْرٍ شَهِدْنا
يَوْمَ أَبْدَت لَنا القِبَابَ قُباءُ

What light and what bloom did we witness the day Quba revealed its domes to us!

قَرَّ منها دَمْعِي وفَرَّ اصْطبَارِي
فدُمُوعي سَيْلٌ وصَبْرِي جُفاءُ

My tears flowed freely from it and my patience fled, so my tears became a torrent and my patience vanished like froth.

فترى الرَّكْبَ طائرِينَ من الشَّوْ
قِ إِلى طَيْبَةٍ لَهُمْ ضَوْضاءُ

So you see the caravan flying from longing towards Taybah, raising a clamor.

وكأَنَّ الزُّوَّارَ مَا مَسَّتِ البَأْ
ساءُ منهم خَلْقاً ولا الضَّرَّاءُ

And it was as if no hardship or adversity had ever touched the visitors' beings.

كلُّ نفسٍ منها ابتهال وسؤْلٌ
ودُعاءٌ وَرَغْبَة وَابْتِغَاءُ

Every soul among them was filled with supplication and request, prayer, desire, and fervent seeking.

وَزَفيرٌ تَظُنُّ منه صُدوراً
صادحاتٍ يَعْتادُهُنَّ زُقاءُ

And a sighing from which you would imagine chests to be singing birds whose cries were habitual.

وَبُكَاءٌ يُغْرِيِهِ بالعين مَدّ
وَنجيبٌ يَحُثُّه اسْتِعلاءُ

And weeping that entices the eye to flow, and a noble lament urged on by spiritual exaltation.

وجُسومٌ كَأَنَّمَا رَحَضَتْهَا
منْ عظيم المَهَابَةِ الرُّحَضاءُ

And bodies as if they had been washed by the sweat of immense awe.

وَوجُوهٌ كأَنَّما ألْبَسَتْها
منْ حياءٍ ألوانَها الحرْباءُ

And faces as if the chameleon had clothed them with its colors, out of modesty.

ودموعٌ كأنّما أرسلتها
من جفونٍ سحابةٌ وطفاءُ

And tears as if they were sent forth from eyelids by a heavily laden cloud.

فَحَطَطْنا الرِّحالَ حيثُ يحَطُّ ال
وِزْرُ عنّا وترفع الحوجاءُ

So we laid down our burdens where our sins are lifted from us and our needs are fulfilled.

وَقَرَأْنا السلامَ أكْرَمَ خلق ال
لَه مِنْ حيثُ يُسمَعُ الإقْراءُ

And we recited salutations to the most noble of Allah's creation, from a place where such recitations are heard and received.

وذهلنا عند اللقاء وكم أَذْ
هَلَ صَبَّاً من الحَبيبِ لِقاءُ

And we were entranced at the encounter, for how often does a lover's meeting with the beloved leave them utterly spellbound?

وَوَجمنَا مِنَ المَهَابَةِ حتَّى
لا كلامٌ منا ولا إيماءُ

And we were struck dumb by such reverence that neither speech nor gesture could issue forth from us.

وَرَجَعْنا وَللقلُوبِ التفاتا
تٌ إليه وللجُسوم انْثِناءُ

And we returned, though our hearts kept turning back towards him with longing glances, and our bodies inclined in his direction.

وَسَمحْنا بما نُحِبُّ وقد يَس
مَحُ عند الضرورةِ البُخلاءُ

And we gave generously of what we held dear, for even the most parsimonious may yield their treasures when necessity compels.

يا أبا القاسمِ الذي ضِمنَ إِقسا
مِي عليه مَدْحٌ لهُ وَثَنَاءُ

O Abul Qasim ﷺ, my solemn oaths are pledged to your praise and eulogy.

بالعلومِ التي عَليكَ مِن الل
هِ بلا كاتِبٍ لها إِمْلاءُ

By the divine knowledge bestowed upon you from Allah, which was dictated to you without the need for any scribe.

ومسير الصَّبا بنصْرِك شَهْرا
فكأَنَّ الصَّبا لَدَيكَ رُخاءُ

And by the east wind that journeyed for a month to aid you, it was as if the very breeze became gentle and compliant at your command.

وَعَلِيٍّ لمَّا تَفَلْتَ بِعَيْنَيْ
هِ وكلتاهما مَعاً رمْداءُ

And by Ali, when you ﷺ blew upon his eyes, both of which were simultaneously afflicted with ophthalmia.

فَغَدا ناظراً بِعَيْنَيْ عُقَابٍ
في غَزاةٍ لها العُقَابُ لِواءُ

So he became able to see with the keenness of an eagle's eyes, in a battle where the eagle itself served as a victorious banner.

وَبِرَيْحانَتَيْنِ طيبُهُما مِن
كَ الذي أودعتهُما الزَّهْراءُ

And by the two sweet basil plants, whose fragrance emanated from you, and whom Az-Zahra entrusted to your loving care.

كُنْتَ تُؤْوِيهِمَا إليك كما آ
وَتْ من الخَطِّ نُقْطَتَيْهَا اليَاءُ

You used to embrace them close to you, just as the letter 'ya' shelters its two dots beneath its line.

مِنْ شهيدَيْنِ ليس يُنْسِيَني الطَّف
فُ مُصابَيْهِما وَلا كَرْبَلاءُ

From two martyrs, whose calamities neither the land of At-Taff nor Karbala can ever make me forget.

مَا رَعَى فيهما ذِمامَك مرؤو
سٌ وَقد خانَ عَهْدَكَ الرُّؤساءُ

No leader honored your sacred trust concerning them, and indeed, the rulers betrayed the covenant they had made with you.

أبْدَلوا الودَّ وَالحَفيظَةَ في القُرْ
بَى وَأَبدَتْ ضِبَابها النَّافِقاءُ

They exchanged love and protection for kinship with enmity, and the hidden malice of hypocrisy revealed its true nature.

وَقَسَتْ منهم قلوبٌ عَلَى مَنْ
بَكَتِ الأرضُ فقدَهم والسماءُ

And their hearts hardened against those for whose loss the very earth and sky shed tears.

فابْكِهِمْ ما اسْتَطَعْتَ إنَّ قليلاً
في عَظيمٍ مِن المُصابِ البُكاءُ

So weep for them as much as you are able, for any amount of weeping is but little in the face of such immense calamity.

كلَّ يوْمٍ وَكلُّ أَرْضٍ لِكَرْبي
منهمُ كَرْبَلا وَعاشورَاءُ

For my sorrow over them, every day feels like Ashura and every land becomes a Karbala.

آلَ بَيْتِ النبيِّ إِنَّ فُؤادِي
ليسَ يُسْلِيهِ عَنْكم التَّأْسَاءُ

O Household of the Prophet ﷺ, truly my heart finds no solace or comfort concerning your plight.

غيرَ أَنِّي فَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَى الل
هِ وَتَفْوِيضِيَ الأُمورَ بَراءُ

Except that I have entrusted my affair to God, and my entrusting of all matters is a release from all blame.

رُبَّ يومٍ بِكَربَلاءَ مُسيئٍ
خَفَّفَتْ بعض وِزْرِهِ الزَّوْراءُ

How many a day in Karbala, for a wrongdoer, has the Zaurā' lightened some of his burden of sin.

وَالأَعادِي كَأَنَّ كلَّ طَرِيحٍ
منهمُ الزَّقُّ حُلَّ عَنْه الوِكاءُ

And the enemies, as if every fallen one among them was a wineskin from which the stopper had been removed, utterly drained of life.

آلَ بيتِ النبيِّ طبتُم فطابَ الْ
مَدْحُ لِي فيكُمُ وَطابَ الرّثاءُ

O Household of the Prophet ﷺ, you are pure and excellent, so both my praise for you and my lamentation are good and fitting.

أنا حَسَّانُ مَدْحِكم فإذَا نُحْ
تُ عليكمْ فإنَّنِي الخنساءُ

I am the Hassan of your praise, and if I lament for you, then I am Al-Khansa'.

سُدْتُمُ النّاسَ بالتُّقَى وَسِواكم
سَوَّدَتْهُ البَيْضاءُ والصَّفْراءُ

You led the people through piety, while others were made leaders by silver and gold.

وَبِأصحابك الذين همُ بَعْ
دَكَ فينا الهُداةُ وَالأوْصِياءُ

And by your Companions, who after you are the guides and successors among us.

أَحْسَنُوا بعدكَ الخِلافَةَ فِي الدي
نِ وَكلٌّ لِما تَوَلَّى إزَاءُ

They excellently managed the Caliphate in religion after you, and each was a perfect match for the task he undertook.

أَغْنياءٌ نزاهَةً فُقَرَاء
عُلَمَاءٌ أَئمَّةٌ أُمَرَاءُ

They were rich in integrity yet poor in worldly possessions, scholars, leaders, and commanders.

زَهِدُوا في الدُّنَا فما عُرِفَ المَي
لُ إلَيْهَا منهم وَلا الرَّغْبَاءُ

They renounced the worldly life, so no inclination or strong desire for it was ever known from them.

أَرْخَصُوا في الوغَى نُفُوسَ مُلُوكٍ
حارَبُوها أسلابُها إغْلاءُ

In battle, they made cheap the lives of kings whom they fought, though their spoils were precious.

كلُّهُمْ في أحكامه ذو اجتهادٍ
وَصَوابٍ وَكُلُّهمْ أَكفاءُ

All of them, in their judgments, possessed diligence and correctness, and all were equally competent.

رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمُ وَرَضُوا عَنْ
هُ فأنَّى يَخطو إليهم خَطَاءُ

God was pleased with them, and they were pleased with Him, so how could error ever approach them?

جاء قَوْمٌ مِنْ بَعْدِ قَوْمٍ بحَقٍّ
وَعَلَى المَنْهَجِ الحَنِيفِيِّ جاؤوا

Generations came, one after another, upholding the truth, and they followed the upright Abrahamic path.

ما لموسى وَلا لعِيسى حَوارِي
يُونَ في فَضْلِهم وَلا نُقَبَاءُ

Neither Moses nor Jesus had disciples or chieftains whose virtue matched that of the Companions.

بأَبي بَكْرٍ اِلذي صَحَّ لِلنَّا
سِ به في حياتك الإِقتِداءُ

By Abu Bakr, whom people rightly followed during your ﷺ lifetime.

والمُهَدِّي يَوْمَ السَّقِيفَةِ لَما
أرْجَفَ الناسُ أنه الدَّأْدَاءُ

And the one who guided on the day of Saqifah, when people spread rumors that it was a great calamity.

أَنقذَ الدينَ بعدَ ما كان للد
دينِ عَلَى كلِّ كُرْبَةٍ إشْفَاءُ

He saved the religion after it was on the brink of every distress.

أَنْفَقَ المالَ في رِضَاكَ وَلا مَن
نٌ وَأَعْطَى جَمَّاً وَلا إكْداءُ

He spent wealth for your pleasure, without boasting of his generosity, and he gave abundantly, never holding back.

وأبي حَفْصٍ الذي أظهر الل
هُ به الدينَ فارعَوى الرُّقباءُ

And by Abu Hafs (Umar), through whom God made the religion manifest, thereby deterring the watchful enemies.

والذي تَقْرُبُ الأباعِدُ في الل
هِ إليه وَتَبْعُدُ القُرَباءُ

And he through whom the distant draw near to God, and the close become distant.

عُمَر بن الخطابِ مَنْ قَوْلُهُ الفَص
لُ ومَنْ حُكْمُهُ السَّوِيُّ السّواءُ

Umar ibn al-Khattab, whose word is decisive and whose judgment is perfectly just.

فَرَّ منه الشيطانُ إذْ كانَ فارو
قاً فلِلنَّارِ مِنْ سَنَاهُ انْبِراءُ

Satan fled from him, for he was Al-Faruq, and from his radiant light, hellfire recoils.

وَابْن عفَّانَ ذِي الأيادي التي طا
لَ إلى المصطفى بها الإِسْدَاءُ

And Ibn Affan, possessor of deeds whose beneficence towards the Chosen One ﷺ was long-lasting.

حَفَر البِئْرَ جَهَّزَ الجَيْشَ أهْدَى الْ
هَدْيَ لما أنْ صَدَّهُ الأعْداءُ

He dug the well, equipped the army, and offered the sacrificial animals when the enemies prevented him.

وَأبَى أنْ يَطُوفَ بالبيتِ إذْ لمْ
يَدْنُ منه إلى النبيِّ فِناءُ

And he refused to circumambulate the Kaaba when no one from the Prophet's ﷺ retinue was near it.

فَجَزَتْهُ عنها بِبِيعَةِ رِضْوا
نٍ يَدٌ مِنْ نَبِيِّهِ بَيْضَاءُ

So, a blessed hand from his Prophet ﷺ rewarded him for that with the Pledge of Ridwan.

أدَبٌ عنده تَضَاعَفَتِ الأع
مالُ بالترْكِ حَبَّذَا الأُدَباءُ

Such was his etiquette, by which deeds were multiplied through abstention; how excellent are those of refined manners!

وَعَلِيٍّ صِنْوِ النبيّ وَمَنْ دِي
نُ فُؤادِي وِدادُهُ وَالوَلاءُ

And Ali, the Prophet's ﷺ kinsman, whose love and loyalty are the very religion of my heart.

وَوَزيرِ ابن عَمِّه في المعالي
ومِنَ الأهلِ تُسْعَدُ الوُزَراءُ

And the minister of his cousin in noble deeds, for ministers from the family are blessed.

لم يَزِدْهُ كَشْفُ الغِطاءِ يَقِيناً
بَل هُوَ الشمْسُ ما عليه غِطاءُ

The removal of the veil did not increase his certainty, for he is like the sun upon which there is no veil.

وبباقِي أصحابِكَ المُظْهِرِ التَّرْ
تيبِ فينا تَفْضِيلُهم والولاءُ

And by the rest of your companions, whose superiority and loyalty are manifest among us in their ranking.

طَلْحَةِ الخَيْرِ المُرْتَضِيهِ رَفيقاً
وَاحداً يومَ فَرَّت الرُّفَقَاءُ

Talha the Good, whom he ﷺ chose as a sole companion on the day when other companions fled.

وَحَوارِيِّكَ الزُّبَيْرِ أبي القَرْ
مِ الذي أَنْجَبَتْ بِهِ أسماءُ

And your disciple Al-Zubayr, father of the noble one, whom Asma bore.

وَالصَّفِيَّيْنِ تَوْأَمِ الفضل سَعْدٍ
وسَعِيدٍ إنْ عُدَّتِ الأصْفياءُ

And the two chosen ones, twins of virtue, Saad and Saeed, if the pure ones are counted.

وابْنِ عَوْفٍ مَنْ هَوَّنَتْ نفسُه الدُّن
يَا بِبَذْلٍ يُمِدُّهُ إثْراءُ

And Ibn Awf, whose soul belittled the world through generosity, which his wealth sustained.

والمُكَنَّى أبا عُبيْدَةَ إذْ يَعْ
زِي إليه الأمانةَ الأُمَناءُ

And he who is known as Abu Ubaydah, to whom the trustworthy attribute trustworthiness.

وَبِعَمَّيْكَ نَيِّرَي فَلَكِ المَج
دِ وكلٌّ أتَاهُ منك إتاءُ

And by your two uncles, the two luminaries of the galaxy of glory, and from you came the bounty to each.

وبأمِّ السِّبْطَيْنِ زَوْجِ عَلِيٍّ
وَبَنِيها وَمَنْ حَوَتْهُ العَبَاءُ

And by the mother of the two grandsons, the wife of Ali, and her sons, and all whom the cloak encompassed.

وَبِأَزواجكَ اللَّواتي تَشَرَّفْ
ن بأنْ صانَهُنَّ منك بِناءُ

And by your wives, who were honored by the protection of a structure from you.

الأمانَ الأمانَ إنَّ فُؤادِي
من ذُنوبٍ أَتَيْتُهُنَّ هَواءُ

Refuge, refuge! For my heart is utterly exposed and trembling from the sins I have committed.

قد تَمَسَّكْتُ مِنْ وِدَادِكَ بالحَب
لِ الذي اسْتَمْسَكَتْ به الشفَعاءُ

I have clung to the rope of your love, the very rope to which all intercessors have held fast.

وَأبى اللَّهُ أنْ يَمَسَّنِيَ السُّو
ءُ بحالٍ وَلِي إليك الْتِجاءُ

God has refused that any harm should ever touch me, for I have sought refuge in you.

قد رَجَوْناكَ للأُمورِ الّتي أب
رَدُها فِي فُؤَادِنا رَمْضاءُ

We have placed our hopes in you for all matters, even the least of which feels like burning sand in our hearts.

وَأَتَيْنا إليكَ أَنْضاءَ فَقْرٍ
حَمَلَتْنا إلى الغِنَى أَنْضاءُ

We have come to you, worn out by poverty, for it is this very state of exhaustion that has carried us towards true richness.

وانْطَوَتْ في الصُّدُورِ حاجاتُ نفسٍ
ما لها عَنْ نَدَى يَدَيْكَ انْطِوَاءُ

And within our hearts are concealed needs of the soul, which cannot be resolved or satisfied except by the generosity of your hands.

فأَغِثْنَا يَا مَنْ هُوَ الغَوثُ والغَيْ
ثُ إذا أَجْهَدَ الورَى اللّأْوَاءُ

So aid us, O you who are the succor and the rain of relief, when humanity is exhausted by hardship ﷺ.

وَالجَوَادُ الذِي به تُفْرَجُ الغُم
مَةُ عَنا وتُكْشَفُ الحَوْباءُ

And the generous one through whom distress is relieved from us, and calamity is unveiled.

يا رحيماً بالمؤمنين إذا ما
ذَهِلَت عن أبنائها الرُّحَماءُ

O you who are merciful to the believers, even when the most merciful among people forget their own children.

يا شفيعاً في المُذنبين إذا أش
فقَ مِنْ خَوفِ ذَنْبِهِ البُرَآءُ

O intercessor for the sinners, even when the innocent tremble with fear of their own sins.

جُدْ لعاصٍ ومَا سِوايَ هُوَ العا
صِي وَلكنْ تَنَكُّرِي اسْتِحْياءُ

Be generous to a sinner, and though I am indeed the sinner, my denial is but a veil of modesty.

وتَدَارَكْهُ بالعناية ما دا
مَ له بالذِّمامِ منك ذماءُ

And reach him with your care, as long as he retains any remnant of your protection and covenant.

أخَّرَتْهُ الأعمالُ والمالُ عَمَّا
قدَّمَ الصَّالحُونَ والأغنياءُ

His deeds and wealth have held him back from the good that the righteous and the wealthy have presented.

كل يومٍ ذُنُوبُهُ صاعداتٌ
وعليها أنفاسُهُ صُعَدَاءُ

Every day his sins are ascending, and his breaths are heavy sighs under their weight.

أَلِفَ البِطْنَةَ المُبَطِّئَة السَّيْ
رِ بدار بها البِطانُ بِطَاءُ

He became accustomed to gluttony, which slows down the journey, in a dwelling where the gluttonous are inherently sluggish.

فَبَكَى ذَنْبَهُ بِقَسْوَةِ قَلْبٍ
نَهَتِ الدَّمْعَ فالبُكاءُ مُكاءُ

So he wept for his sin with a hardened heart that forbade tears, rendering his weeping a mere hollow sound.

وغَدَا يَعْتِبُ القَضَاءُ ولا عذ
ر لعاص فيما يسوق القضاءُ

And he began to blame divine decree, yet there is no excuse for a sinner in what fate brings forth.

أوثقته من الذنوب دُيُونٌ
شَدَّدَتْ فِي اقْتِضائِها الغُرَماءُ

Debts of sin have bound him, and the creditors are relentlessly demanding their payment.

ما لَهُ حِيلَةٌ سِوَى حِيلَةِ المُو
ثَقِ إِمَّا تَوَسُّلٌ أَوْ دُعَاءُ

He has no recourse but that of one bound: either seeking intercession or prayer.

رَاجِياً أَنْ تعودَ أعمالُه السُّو
ءُ بِغُفْرَانِ اللَّهِ وَهْيَ هَباءُ

Hoping that his evil deeds will be transformed into nothingness by God's forgiveness.

أَوْ تُرَى سَيِّئاتُهُ حَسَناتٍ
فيقَالُ اسْتحالتِ الصَّهْباءُ

Or are his misdeeds seen as good deeds, such that it is proclaimed the very red wine has been transformed?

كلُّ أمْرٍ تُعنَى به تُقْلَبُ الأعْ
يانُ فيه وتَعْجَبُ البُصَراءُ

Every matter you attend to sees its very essences transformed, astonishing those with keen insight.

رُبَّ عَيْنٍ تَفَلْتَ في مائها المِلْ
حِ فأضْحَى وَهْوَ الفُراتُ الرَّوَاءُ

How many a spring, into whose salty waters you ﷺ spat, became thereafter the sweet, flowing Euphrates.

آهِ مِما جَنَيْتُ إنْ كانَ يُغْنِي
ألِفٌ مِنْ عَظيمِ ذنْبٍ وهاءُ

Oh, from what I have committed, if a mere fraction of a great sin could ever suffice!

أرْتَجِي التَّوْبَةَ النَّصُوحَ وفِي القَلْ
بِ نفَاقٌ وفي اللسانِ رِياءُ

I yearn for sincere repentance, yet hypocrisy resides in my heart and ostentation on my tongue.

ومتى يَسْتَقيمُ قَلْبِي ولِلْجِسْ
مِ اعْوِجَاجٌ مِنْ كَبْرتي وانْحِناءُ

And when will my heart be upright, while my body is bent and crooked from my old age and infirmity?

كُنْتُ في نَوْمَةِ الشَّبابِ فما اسْتَيْ
قَظْتُ إِلَّا ولِمَّتي شَمْطاءُ

I was lost in the slumber of youth, and did not awaken until my forelock had turned grizzled.

وتمادَيْتُ أَقْتَفي أَثَرَ القَوْ
مِ فطالَتْ مَسَافَةٌ واقْتِفَاءُ

And I persisted in following the footsteps of others, so the journey and the pursuit became exceedingly long.

فوَرا السائرينَ وهْوَ أمامِي
سُبُلٌ وَعْرَةٌ وأرضٌ عَراءُ

Behind the righteous travelers, yet still before me, lie rugged paths and barren, desolate lands.

حَمِدَ المُدلِجونَ غِبَّ سُرَاهُم
وكَفَى مَنْ تَخَلَّف الإِبْطاءُ

Those who journeyed diligently through the night found praise after their travels, while for those who lagged behind, the very delay was their sufficient consequence.

رِحلةٌ لَمْ يَزَلْ يُفنِّدني الصَّي
فُ إِذَا مَا نَوَيْتُها والشِّتاءُ

It is a journey that summer always deters me from, whenever I intend it, as does winter.

يَتَّقِي حُرُّ وجْهِي الحَرَّ والبَرْ
دَ وَقَدْ عَزَّ مِنْ لَظى الاتِّقاءُ

My noble face seeks to avoid both heat and cold, yet it has become exceedingly difficult to guard against the raging flames.

ضِقْتُ ذَرْعاً مِمَّا جَنَيْتُ فَيوْمِي
قَمْطَرِيرٌ وليلَتي دَرْعاءُ

I am utterly distressed by what I have committed, so my day is gloomy and my night is dark.

وَتَذَكَّرْتُ رَحْمَةَ اللَّهِ فالبِش
رُ لِوَجْهِي أنّى انْتَحَى تِلْقاءُ

Then I remembered the mercy of Allah, and joy illuminated my face wherever it turned.

فألحَّ الرَّجاء والخوفُ بالقَلْ
بِ ولِلْخَوفِ والرَّجا إِخْفاءُ

So hope and fear persisted in my heart, for both fear and hope possess a subtle concealment.

صَاحِ لا تأسَ إنْ ضَعُفْتَ عَنِ الطَّا
عةِ واسْتَأْثَرَتْ بها الأقوياءُ

Friend, do not despair if you are weak in obedience, and the strong have monopolized it.

إنَّ للَّهِ رَحمةً وأحَقُّ ال
ناسِ منه بالرَّحمةِ الضُّعَفَاءُ

Indeed, Allah possesses mercy, and the most deserving of His mercy are the weak.

فابقَ في العُرْجِ عندَ مُنْقَلَبِ الذَّوْ
دِ ففِي العَوْدِ تَسْبِقُ العَرْجاءُ

So remain among the lame at the turning point of the herd, for in the return, the lame one may well overtake.

لا تَقُلْ حاسداً لِغَيْرِك هذَا
أثْمَرَتْ نَخْلَهُ ونَخْلِي عَفاءُ

Do not say, out of envy for another, "His palm tree bore fruit, while my palm tree is barren."

وائْتِ بالمَسْتَطاع مِنْ عَمَل البر
ر فقدْ يُسْقِطُ الثِّمارَ الإِتاءُ

And perform what good deeds you are able, for even an abundance of fruit may cause some to fall.

وبِحُبِّ النبيِّ فابْغِ رِضَى الل
هِ فَفِي حُبِّهِ الرِّضا والحِبَاءُ

Therefore, by loving the Prophet ﷺ, seek the pleasure of God, for in his love are found both divine contentment and abundant reward.

يا نبيَّ الهُدَى اسْتِغَاثَةَ مَلْهو
فٍ أَضَرَّتْ بحالِه الحوْبَاءُ

O Prophet of Guidance ﷺ, this is the fervent plea of one in deep distress, whose state has been grievously afflicted by sin.

يَدَّعِي الحُبَّ وهْوَ يأْمُرُ بالسُّو
ءِ ومَنْ لِي أنْ تَصْدُقَ الرَّغْبَاءُ

He claims to love, yet he commands evil, and how can I expect my own desire for sincerity to be true?

أَيُّ حُبٍّ يَصِحُّ منه وطَرْفِي
لِلْكَرَى واصِلٌ وطَيْفُكَ رَاءُ

What true love can emanate from him whose eye is constantly drawn to slumber, while your blessed image ﷺ is ever present to be seen?

ليت شِعرِي أَذَاكَ مِنْ عُظمِ ذَنْبٍ
أمْ حُظُوظُ المُتَيَّمِينَ حُظَاءُ

Would that I knew if this state is due to the enormity of my sin, or if these are merely the destined portions of those passionately devoted.

إنْ يكُنْ عُظْمُ زَلَّتي حَجْبَ رُؤْيَا
كَ فقدْ عَزَّ داءَ قلبي الدَّواءُ

If the enormity of my transgression has indeed veiled the sight of you ﷺ from me, then the remedy for my heart's affliction has become utterly unattainable.

كيف يَصدا بالذَّنْبِ قلبُ مُحِبٍّ
وله ذِكْرُكَ الجميلُ جِلاءُ

How can the heart of a lover become tarnished by sin, when your beautiful remembrance ﷺ serves as its radiant polish?

هذه عِلَّتي وأنت طبيبي
ليسَ يَخفَى عليك في القلبِ داءُ

This is my ailment, and you ﷺ are my physician, for no sickness of the heart remains concealed from your knowledge.

ومِنَ الفَوْزِ أنْ أبُثَّكَ شكوَى
هِيَ شكوَى إليكَ وهْيَ اقْتضاءُ

It is indeed a triumph that I can pour out my complaint to you ﷺ, a complaint directed to you that is also a rightful claim.

ضُمِّنتها مَدَائح مُستطابٌ
فيك منها المَديحُ والإصغاءُ

I have embedded within it praises, from which both the eulogy and the attentive listening are delightful when directed towards you ﷺ.

قلما حاوَلتْ مَدِيحكَ إِلّا
سَاعَدَتْهَا مِيمٌ ودالٌ وحَاءُ

Rarely did I attempt to compose your praise ﷺ without the letters Mim, Dal, and Ha readily assisting my endeavor.

حقَّ لِي فيكَ أنْ أُسَاحِلَ قوْماً
سَلَّمَتْ منهم لَدَلْوِي الدِّلاءُ

It is my rightful claim concerning you ﷺ to contend with those poets whose buckets have yielded to mine in poetic prowess.

إنَّ لِي غيرةً وقد زَاحَمَتْني
في معاني مَديحِكَ الشُّعراءُ

Indeed, I possess a fervent jealousy, for other poets have vied with me in capturing the profound meanings of your praise ﷺ.

ولقلبي فيك الغُلوُّ وأنَّى
لِلِساني في مَدْحِكَ الغُلواءُ

My heart holds an excessive love for you ﷺ, yet how can my tongue ever reach such an extreme in expressing your praise?

فأَثِبْ خاطِراً يَلَذُّ له مَدْ
حُك عِلْماً بأَنه اللَّأْلاءُ

Therefore, reward a mind that finds delight in your praise ﷺ, knowing full well that such praise is sheer brilliance.

حاكَ مِنْ صَنْعَةِ القَرِيض بُرُوداً
لَكَ لم تحْكِ وشْيَها صَنْعَاءُ

It has woven from the art of poetry splendid garments for you ﷺ, whose intricate embroidery even the skilled artisans of Sana'a could not replicate.

أعجزَ الدُّرَّ نَظمُهُ فاستوتْ في
هِ اليَدَانِ الصَّناعُ والخَرْقَاءُ

Its composition has rendered even pearls inadequate, making both the skilled and the clumsy hands equal in its creation.

فَارْضَهُ أفْصَحَ امرئٍ نطقَ الضَّا
دَ فقامتْ تَغَارُ منها الظاءُ

So accept it, O most eloquent of men ﷺ, who pronounced the letter Dad with such perfection that the letter Zha rose in envy of it.

أبِذِكْرِ الآياتِ أُوفِيكَ مَدْحَاً
أيْنَ مِنى وأَيْنَ منها الوفَاءُ

Can I truly fulfill your praise ﷺ merely by mentioning the divine verses, when my own capacity is so limited and where is the true fulfillment from them?

أمْ أُمَارِي بهِنَّ قَوْمَ نَبِيٍّ
ساءَ ما ظَنَّهُ بِيَ الأغبياءُ

Or should I contend with these verses against the people of a Prophet ﷺ, how poorly have the ignorant indeed judged me!

ولَكَ الأُمَّةُ التي غَبَطَتْهَا
بكَ لَمَّا أتيْتَها الأنبياءُ

And to you belongs the nation which the Prophets themselves envied when you came to it.

لَمْ نَخَفْ بَعْدَكَ الضَّلالَ وفينا
وَارِثُوا نُورِ هَدْيِكَ العُلَماءُ

We have not feared misguidance after you, for among us are the scholars who inherit the light of your guidance.

فانْقَضَتْ آيُ الَانبياءُ وَآيا
تُكَ في الناس ما لَهُنَّ انْقضاءُ

For the signs of the Prophets have passed away, yet your signs among people are without end.

والكراماتَ منهمُ مُعجزاتٌ
حازَهَا مِنْ نَوَالِكَ الأولياءُ

And the miracles (karamat) manifested by them are wonders that the saints attained through your bounty.

إنَّ مِنْ مُعجزاتِكَ العَجزَ عَنْ وص
فِكَ إذْ لا يَحُدُّهُ الإحصاءُ

Indeed, among your miracles is the very inability to describe you, for no enumeration can encompass your essence.

كيفَ يَسْتَوعِبُ الكلامُ سَجَايا
كَ وَهَلْ تَنْزِحُ البحار الرِّكَاءُ

How can mere words encompass your noble qualities, and can shallow seas ever be drained dry?

ليسَ مِنْ غايَةٍ لِوَصْفِكَ أَبغي
ها وللْقَوْلِ غايَةٌ وانتهاءُ

I seek no limit for your description, though speech itself has a boundary and an end.

إنما فضلُكَ الزَّمَانُ وآيا
تُكَ فيما نَعُدُّهُ الآناءُ

Indeed, your excellence is time itself, and your signs are the very moments we count.

لَمْ أُطِلْ في تَعْدادِ مَدْحِكَ نُطْقي
ومُرادِي بذلك استقصاءُ

I have not prolonged my speech in enumerating your praise, though my intention is to be exhaustive.

غير إنيَ ظمآنُ وَجْدٍ ومَا لي
بِقَليلٍ مِنَ الورودِ ارْتِواءُ

Yet I am parched with ardent love, and no small draught can quench my thirst.

فسلامٌ عليك تَتْرَى مِنَ الل
هِ وَتَبْقَى به لَكَ البَأواءُ

So may peace be upon you ﷺ, continuously from Allah, and by it may your glory endure.

وسلامٌ عليك منكَ فما غَي
رُك منه لكَ السلام كِفاءُ

And peace be upon you ﷺ from yourself, for none other than you is a fitting match for that peace.

وَسَلامٌ مِنْ كلِّ ما خَلَقَ الل
هُ لِتحْيا بِذِكْرِكَ الأملاءُ

And peace from all that Allah has created, so that generations may live by your remembrance.

وَصلاةٌ كالمِسْكِ تَحْمِله مِن
ني شمَالٌ إليكَ أَو نكْباءُ

And a prayer like musk, carried from me to you ﷺ by a north wind or a crosswind.

وَسَلامٌ عَلَى ضَرِيحِكَ تخْضَل
لُ به منه تُرْبَةٌ وَعْساءُ

And peace upon your tomb ﷺ, by which its soft, sandy earth becomes moist.

وَثَنَاءٌ قَدَّمْتَ بينَ يَدَيْ نَجْ
وَايَ إذْ لم يكن لَديَّ ثَراءُ

And praise that I offered before my supplication, as I possessed no wealth.

ما أَقَامَ الصلاةَ مَنْ عَبَدَ الل
هِ وقامتْ بِربِّهَا الأشياءُ

How perfectly did he who worshipped Allah establish prayer, while all things stood by their Lord!
