His clothing ﷺ and his grooming

His clothing ﷺ

The garments he liked best ﷺ were white and the ḥibrah. The sleeve of his shirt ﷺ reached to the wrist. He wore whatever was available and whatever was gifted to him. Sometimes he wore Yemeni sandals and cut-down sandals. He used to comb his hair with a comb and to wear a turban, letting the end of his turban hang between his shoulders.

  • The garments he loved ﷺ: white and the ḥibrah (striped Yemeni brocade)
  • The sleeve of his shirt reached to the wrist — 'short sleeves' is the more correct reading
  • He sometimes wore a red robe with fur — on festivals and other occasions
  • He sometimes wore two yellow garments
  • He wore a black turban and let its end hang between his shoulders
  • He wore a ring and sandals — cut-down sandals with two straps

His physical strength ﷺ

He ﷺ was complete in strength in his limbs. There are reports indicating his physical power; they related that Rukana ibn Abd Yazid ibn Hashim — who was one of the strongest of Quraysh — challenged the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He stood up and wrestled him; when the Messenger ﷺ seized him he threw him down so that he could not do anything. Then he said, 'Return, O Muhammad.' He returned and threw him down a second time. Rukana went to his people and said: 'O sons of Abd Manaf, make peace with your man; by Allah I have never seen anyone stronger than him.'

  • He wrestled Rukana ibn Abd Yazid — one of the fiercest men of Quraysh — and threw him down twice
  • Rukana said to his people: "By Allah, I have never seen anyone stronger than him"
  • His physical strength ﷺ was a sign of the truth of his prophethood — and Rukana embraced Islam
