His noble face ﷺ

The radiance of his face ﷺ

Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the best of people in face and the best of them in character; neither notably tall nor short." — narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim [al-Bukhari] [Muslim]. And Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "I have not seen anything more beautiful than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; as if the sun were running across his face." — narrated by Ahmad with an authentic chain [Ahmad]. And ar-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "If you had seen him you would have seen the sun rising." — narrated by al-Darimi [al-Darimi].

  • The best of people in face — said by al-Bara' ibn 'Azib in the two Sahihs [al-Sahihayn]
  • As if the sun were running across his face ﷺ — said by Abu Hurayrah in Musnad Ahmad [Musnad Ahmad]
  • As if the sun were rising — said by ar-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh in al-Darimi [al-Darimi]
  • His face shone like the moon on the night of full moon — described by Hind ibn Abi Halah
  • People were illuminated by the light of his face in the battles and journeys

Detailed characteristics of his face ﷺ

Hind ibn Abi Halah, describing his noble face, said: "A broad forehead, eyebrows azj in a single sweep without a horn." And 'Ali said: "There is roundness in his face." His eyebrows ﷺ were arched, long and thick in a continuous sweep without joining, and between them a vein that stood out when he was angry. He had aqna al-'arnayn — that is, a raised bridge in his noble nose — and a light above it which, to one who did not look closely, might appear as a faint glow.

  • Wide forehead — a broad noble forehead, a sign of intelligence and leadership
  • Azj eyebrows — eyebrows fine at the tips, long in extent and arched
  • Between them a vein that appears with anger — a vein between the eyebrows that becomes prominent when he was angered for the sake of truth
  • Aqna al-'arnayn — a prominence in the bridge of the noble nose
  • Smooth cheeks — his noble cheeks were soft and without any protuberance
  • His beard abundant and full, filling the noble face

The effect of seeing him on the hearts

Seeing him ﷺ transformed whoever saw him; no one saw him without veneration and reverence settling in his heart. Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was more beloved to me than anything, and I could not fill my eyes from him out of reverence for him." Qays ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "If I were not a prophet I would say: This face does not lie." And Yazid al-Farsi said: "I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream, and as I looked at him I saw his face like the moon on the night of full moon."

  • Whoever saw him, his heart was filled with veneration and reverence — said by Amr ibn al-'As, may Allah be pleased with him
  • He could not fill his eyes with looking at him because of the intensity of awe and love
  • His face does not lie — said by the Companions and narrators
  • Whoever saw him at first sight was awed by him; whoever lived with him and came to know him loved him
