Belief in the Angels

A Muslim believes in the angels as a creation of God, whom He chose for absolute obedience and continual glorification. They are luminous beings not visible to humans in their original form, but God has given them the ability to take on physical forms when needed, as occurred when they visited the prophets. Their roles vary between carrying out God’s commands, conveying revelation, managing the affairs of the universe, recording people’s deeds, and protecting and strengthening the believers.

As for the jinn, they are another created species that God made from fire; they are morally responsible and accountable just like humans, divided into faithful, righteous ones and disobedient, rebellious ones. We do not see them in their original form, but they can see us, which explains differences in people’s perception of their existence. They do not know the unseen; their lives are subject to God’s laws in the universe, and they have no power to harm or benefit except by His permission.

The devils are the disbelieving among the jinn, led by Iblis in opposing humans and guiding them toward temptation. Their ability is limited to whispering and making evil appear attractive; they do not have coercive authority over people. The believer who clings to the remembrance of God and lives uprightly is sheltered from their schemes, while those who follow their base desires and neglect their Lord fall into their snares.

Belief in angels and jinn and certainty in the existence of this unseen realm increase reverence for God in the believer’s heart. When someone knows that angels watch their deeds and record their words, this leads them to be mindful of God in private and in public and to seek refuge from Satan’s whispers, which strengthens moral character and encourages obedience and avoidance of sin in hope of God’s reward and mercy.
