Belief in the Revealed Books

A Muslim believes in all the books that God sent down to His prophets, such as the Scrolls of Abraham and Moses, the Psalms (Zabur) of David, and the Gospel of Jesus, peace be upon him. This belief is an integral part of faith, recognizing that God is the source of guidance and truth who addressed humanity through successive heavenly messages, which fosters respect in the believer for all prophets who conveyed these messages to the people.

The Noble Qur’an is the final authority and judge over what came before among the heavenly books; it is the scale by which we weigh the texts that are in our hands today. Whatever reports among those earlier books agree with the Qur’an we believe to be true and preserved, but whatever contradicts or opposes it we are convinced has been subject to alteration and change over the ages and does not represent God’s original words as revealed.

The Noble Qur’an came confirming what preceded it of earlier messages while correcting the distortions that affected them; indeed, it even contains the glad tidings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Torah and the Gospel. This confirmation demonstrates the unity of the divine source and makes the Qur’an the final, trustworthy reference that preserves for humanity the truth of what God intended in those earlier revealed messages.

The essence of belief in these books lies in accepting that they were guidance and light. While we believe that earlier scriptures experienced corruption, we do not dismiss them; rather, we hold to what the Qur’an has informed us about the core of their rulings and values that God has preserved in His Book. Thus the Muslim remains connected to the chain of blessed prophethood, respectful of all of God’s messages, and adherent to the Qur’an as a way of life.
