Belief in the Unseen (Ghayb)

The world is not limited to what our limited senses can perceive; reality is broader than the material realm of sensory testimony. The soul, which is the secret of our life, is an existent reality that we believe in despite its essence being beyond our sensory comprehension. Thus belief in the unseen distinguishes the believer, for he affirms what lies beyond matter by relying on God’s truthful revelation, and this is the highest rank of certainty.

Out of God’s wisdom and mercy He has informed us about what our minds cannot grasp on their own, through His messages that came from beyond ourselves. These divine communications followed established channels, the greatest of which is the sending of angels to the chosen messengers to convey the law; this serves as a clarification that lifts us from the narrowness of mere material concerns to the breadth of knowing God and working for the Last Day.

Virtuous morals cannot be firmly established except on the foundation of faith. The believer who is certain that God sees him in private and in public is the one who truly adheres to good and avoids evil, whether he receives praise or not. Whoever ties his actions solely to material causes remains captive to his personal interests, turning away from spiritual elevation and noble human values.

In conclusion, belief in the unseen does not contradict the laws of nature; God is the Creator of causes and their effects. What some see as a conflict between science and certain unseen realities is actually a shortcoming in understanding. A weather forecast, for example, is not knowledge of the unseen but an inference from God’s laws in observable physical phenomena—much like someone who sees the post approaching and predicts its arrival before it reaches him.
