Belief in the Messengers

People need messengers because they are human—of the same kind as those to whom they are sent: they are born and die, eat and walk in the marketplaces. Peoples in earlier times wondered at sending ordinary humans, but God made clear that a messenger must be from his own people so they may follow his example. The messengers possess no divinity; they are honored servants whom God selected by revelation.

The protection (ʿisma) of the messengers is established with regard to conveying the law: when they convey God’s message, they do not speak from desire. In worldly matters and personal judgments where no revelation was given, they may err, but God does not endorse such mistakes and He shows them the right way, as happened in the story of the blind man and the captives of Badr—this confirms that divine revelation is the true measure.

Muhammad ﷺ is the Seal of the Prophets, and his message is universal for all people and appropriate for every time and place. The Sharia was revealed with great flexibility: it established definitive texts for creed and worship that do not admit change, while leaving wide scope in administrative and political matters for Muslims to endeavor (ijtihad) in achieving the public good, provided they remain within the general principles of Islam.

The personality of Muhammad ﷺ is itself a miracle: his truthfulness, trustworthiness, humility among his companions, and ascetic life are all signs of his greatness. He was a complete human, yet God singled him out for the message and prepared him in a special way, making him a unique model in human history; God has not created anyone like him among the children of Adam ﷺ-656,.

يحتاج الناس إلى الرسل لأنهم بشرٌ من جنس من أُرسلوا إليهم، يولدون ويموتون ويأكلون ويمشون في الأسواق. وقد عجبت الأمم قديماً من إرسال بشر، لكن الله بين أن الرسول يجب أن يكون من جنس قومه ليتأسوا به. فليس في الرسل شيء من الألوهية، بل هم عباد مكرمون اصطفاهم الله بالوحي.

عصمة الرسل ثابتة فيما يتعلق بتبليغ الشريعة؛ فإذا بلغوا عن الله فهم لا ينطقون عن الهوى. أما في الأمور الدنيوية والاجتهادات الشخصية التي لم ينزل فيها وحي، فقد يقع الخطأ، ولكن الله لا يقرهم عليه بل يبين لهم الصواب، كما حدث في قصة الأعمى وقصة أسرى بدر، تأكيداً لأن وحي السماء هو الميزان القويم.

محمد ﷺ هو خاتم الأنبياء، ورسالته عامة للناس كافة وصالحة لكل زمان ومكان. لقد جاءت الشريعة بمرونة عظيمة، حيث وضعت نصوصاً قطعية للعقائد والعبادات لا تقبل التغيير، بينما تركت مساحة واسعة في المعاملات الإدارية والسياسية ليجتهد فيها المسلمون بما يحقق المصلحة العامة، شريطة الالتزام بقواعد الإسلام العامة.

تتسم شخصية محمد ﷺ بكونها معجزة في حد ذاتها؛ فصدقه وأمانته وتواضعه بين أصحابه وحياته الزاهدة كلها دلائل على عظمته. لقد كان بشراً كاملاً، لكن الله اختصه بالرسالة وأعده إعداداً خاصاً، فكان نموذجاً فريداً في تاريخ البشرية، ولم يخلق الله في طراز أبناء آدم مثله ﷺ.
