Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar)
Belief in divine decree in Islam does not mean compulsion or complacent passivity; rather it is an affirmation of God’s will together with confirmation of human responsibility. God’s justice is not measured by our limited human standards; just as a student may see a teacher’s discipline as unfair while it is truly for his benefit, God’s decrees may appear obscure to us, yet at their core they are wisdom and justice beyond our full comprehension.
God has given human beings intellect and will, and He holds them accountable only within the scope of their ability and freedom. Texts that seemingly imply compulsion refer to cosmic matters beyond our capacity for which the servant is not held responsible, whereas deeds that bring reward or punishment lie within the sphere of human choice. Thus guidance and misguidance are the result of a person’s striving and the actions he chose by his free will.
The righteous predecessors made belief in divine decree a motivation for action, struggle, and taking means, trusting that provision and lifespan are decreed; so they worked diligently and relied on God without laziness or passivity. Using divine decree as an excuse to justify neglect or sin is a weak and rejected argument, because a person does not know his unseen affairs but rather follows his desires; therefore no one has an excuse for abandoning what God has commanded.
