Fasting (Sawm)
Fasting is the fourth pillar; it consists of refraining from food, drink, and all things that break the fast from dawn until sunset during the blessed month of Ramadan. Fasting is a school for God‑consciousness, patience, and mercy toward the poor.
Fasting in Islam is a unique educational discipline: it is not merely abstaining from food and drink, but a practical training in self‑control and subjecting one’s desires to the command of God. The believer’s feeling of hunger and thirst on hot days tests his will, teaching him how to overcome his passions by exercising patience through the hardship of worship, seeking the pleasure of God.
One of the highest wisdoms of fasting is nurturing concern for others: when a wealthy person feels hunger, he senses what the destitute truly endure, which awakens in his heart the desire to give and to console. It is a lesson in social compassion and justice, where differences between people soften and the soul longs to help the deprived; thus the act of worship is transformed from a private duty into a practice that unites hearts and strengthens the fabric of society.
Fasting also instills continuous self‑monitoring in the believer: he refrains from what breaks the fast both in private and in public, and this reinforces in him taqwa (God‑consciousness), which is the essence of the religion. By repeating this worship each year, the Muslim becomes accustomed to bringing the obedience of God to mind in all aspects of life, able to abandon what displeases his Lord and to remain steadfast on His path despite temptations and psychological pressures.
