The Two Testimonies (Shahada)
The Shahada is the gateway to Islam; it is the declaration: "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God." It means that there is no true deity worthy of worship except God alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger and the Seal of the Prophets.
The two testimonies are the first door to enter Islam; they are an affirmation by the believer’s tongue and a sincere conviction in his heart that there is no god but God and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. This affirmation is not a mere passing phrase, but a covenant in which the Muslim commits to worship God alone and obey Him, renouncing every false object of worship that the soul might imagine brings benefit or protection.
The meaning of monotheism requires that a person does not associate anyone with God in His authority or legislation. Just as God is the Creator of everything and the Owner of this universe, He alone deserves worship. From this follows that the servant purifies his heart for God in all matters: he puts his love for his Lord above all other loves, and hangs his fear and hope on Him alone, certain that truly no one can bring benefit or harm except Him, Glorious and Exalted.
Islam does not stop at theoretical belief; it extends to a person’s conduct and deeds. For worship for a Muslim encompasses every useful act done for the sake of God, from performing the obligatory duties to developing the earth with good. This approach makes the believer’s whole life directed toward the supreme goal: pleasing his Creator and acting according to His command, making use of the lawful means that God has placed in this world.
