What is Islam?
Islam is the religion of monotheism and peace; it calls people to worship God alone, to believe in all His messengers, to perform righteous deeds, and to uphold noble morals. The word "Islam" means surrendering to God and submitting to His command with love and consent.
Islam is not merely a set of restrictions; it is a way of life that regulates a person’s striving between immediate desires and deferred outcomes. Like a student who leaves worldly amusements to prepare for an exam, the Muslim recognizes that this world is a place of transit, and that the fleeting pleasures and passing delights we see amount to nothing compared with the lasting joy of the Hereafter. It is the natural faculty of reason that distinguishes between truth and falsehood, and between what is beneficial and what is harmful, lifting the person toward elevation and dignity.
Human beings by nature incline toward freedom and resist constraints, but Islam teaches that absolute freedom without limits turns society into chaos. Reason itself has boundaries, civilization has limits, and justice requires constraints. Thus, the religious duty may feel heavy on the soul, like climbing a mountain, because the soul is disposed toward the downhill. Yet whoever practices this patience finds the sweetness of faith, just as a sick person finds health after a painful regimen that renounces tempting foods.
The reality of religion is the belief in one God, the Creator of the universe, who is aware of inner secrets and outward states, who sees a person in private and in public. This belief moves the believer to commit to noble morals; faith is not merely pronouncing the two declarations of faith, but is the cultivation of the earth and the purification of the soul. A Muslim worships God as if he sees Him; and if he does not see Him, he is certain that God sees him, so his conduct becomes a testament to his sincerity and true belief.
Islam is a call to monotheism, to action, and to realism. God did not create us as angels who never err, nor as beasts without reason; He gave us intellect and will so that we may choose our course. The believer’s aim is to attain God’s pleasure, aided by acts of worship that organize life: prayer that connects one to the Lord, fasting that disciplines the self, almsgiving that realizes social solidarity, and pilgrimage that brings Muslims together in goodness. It is a balanced approach that combines building this world with working for the Hereafter.
