The Complete Remedy: Relief from Worry and Forgiveness of Sins
«إِذًا تُكْفَى هَمَّكَ وَيُغْفَرُ لَكَ ذَنْبُكَ»
A man said to the Prophet ﷺ: “I will dedicate all of my supplication to sending blessings upon you.” He replied: “Then your worries will be resolved and your sins will be forgiven.”
Sheikh Abdullah Siraj al-Din identifies this as one of the most remarkable hadith on Salawat. The companion Ubayy ibn Ka'b asked the Prophet ﷺ how much of his supplication time he should dedicate to Salawat. He progressively offered a quarter, then a third, then a half. Each time the Prophet ﷺ said that would be good but more would be better. When Ubayy finally offered to dedicate all of his supplication time to Salawat, the Prophet ﷺ gave the extraordinary response: “Then your worldly worries will be resolved and your sins will be forgiven.”
The book explains: the worldly worries (hamm al-dunya) — God will suffice you in them; and the sins of the Hereafter (dhanb al-akhirah) — God will forgive them. Thus the one who devotes himself to Salawat gains the good of both worlds.
- Salawat can serve as a complete supplication in itself — encompassing all of a person's needs
- The Prophet's response promises two things: worldly sufficiency and otherworldly forgiveness
- This is especially meaningful for those experiencing hardship, grief, or uncertainty
