The characteristics of his beard and hair ﷺ
His noble beard ﷺ
Hind ibn Abi Halah, describing his beard ﷺ, said: "The beard was thick" — meaning abundant and dense. And Jabir ibn Samurah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "He had a lot of beard hair" — [Muslim]. And the Prophet ﷺ used to trim the length and breadth of his beard — [al-Tirmidhi]. His beard would fill the noble chest when it was plaited. And he ﷺ would comb his beard with a comb made of twigs.
- Thick beard — abundant, dense, and intensely black
- He would trim its length and breadth for neatness — [al-Tirmidhi]
- It was full, filling the face and chest
- He would comb it with a comb every morning
His noble hair ﷺ
The hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was 'rajil' — neither curly nor loose and flowing, but wavy, in between. When he made it plentiful it reached the earlobes, and sometimes it reached the shoulders. The Prophet ﷺ would at times comb his hair with water. In Hind's description: "If his ʿaqīqah separated, he would part it; otherwise not." He ﷺ parted his hair more toward the end of his life. The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, sought blessings from his hair and preserved it.
- Rajil hair — a beautiful wave, neither loose and flowing nor tightly curled
- At times it reached the earlobes and at times the shoulders
- He used to part his hair in the latter part of his life — and earlier he followed the People of the Book
- A mother recognized her lost son's camel from afar by a single hair of his ﷺ
- He ﷺ distributed his hair among his Companions during the Farewell Pilgrimage
