His death ﷺ and departure

His final illness ﷺ

His illness began in late Safar in the year 11 AH. During his illness he would say: “O Aisha, I still feel pain from the food I ate at Khaybar; this is the time my aorta will be cut off because of that poison.” At the start of his sickness he used to lead the people in prayer, until when the matter became heavy Abu Bakr al‑Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) found it burdensome to lead the people in prayer.

  • The illness began in late Safar of the year 11 AH
  • He ﷺ relieved his pain by placing water on his head
  • He ordered Abu Bakr al‑Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer when it became too difficult for him

His final moments ﷺ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al‑Awwal in the eleventh year of the Hijra, while he was in the lap of his wife Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). His last words, as he raised his hand to the sky, were “Allahumma ar‑Rafiq al‑A'la (O Allah, the Highest Companion)” three times; then his hand fell and his pure soul departed to his Lord.

  • He died on Monday, 12 Rabi' al‑Awwal, year 11 AH
  • His age at death ﷺ: sixty‑three years, according to the most correct view
  • He ﷺ died in the house of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), in her presence
  • His last words: “Allahumma ar‑Rafiq al‑A'la (O Allah, the Highest Companion)”
  • During his illness he frequently said: “May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they have taken the graves of their prophets as places of worship.”

The funeral prayer over him and his burial ﷺ

The prayer over the Prophet ﷺ was performed without an imam leading the congregation; people entered in groups and prayed over him individually. He ﷺ was buried in the place where he was taken — in the chamber of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) — and he ﷺ said: “No prophet was taken except that he was buried where he was taken.”

  • He ﷺ was buried in Aisha's chamber where he was taken
  • People prayed over him in groups without an imam — men first, then women, then boys
  • Ali ibn Abi Talib, al‑Abbas and Suhayb took charge of preparing him for burial (may Allah be pleased with them)
  • The most deeply grieved was Abu Bakr al‑Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah.”
