Chronological timeline of the prophetic mission
Major prophetic events over the years from the beginning of the mission until his death:
- (1) The first revelation descended in the Cave of Hira — these were the first verses of Surah al-ʿAlaq (96:1-5).
- (2) Islam began secretly and then the Prophet ﷺ proclaimed the message publicly.
- (3) The Isra and Mi'raj and the enjoinment of the five daily prayers.
- (4) The First and Second Pledges of Aqabah.
- (5) The migration of Muslims to Abyssinia (Habasha).
- (6) The deaths of Khadijah and Abu Talib — the Year of Sorrow.
- (7) The three-year boycott by Quraysh of Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib.
- (1 AH) The Prophet's migration (Hijra) to Medina, and the construction of the Prophet's Mosque.
- (2 AH) The change of the qibla to the Kaaba, the enjoinment of fasting in Ramadan, the major Battle of Badr.
- (3 AH) The Battle of Uhud — the martyrdom of Hamza, may Allah be pleased with him.
- (4 AH) The expedition of Bi'r Ma'una — the martyrdom of seventy of the reciters.
- (5 AH) The Battle of the Confederates (Al-Ahzab, the Trench) and the incident of Banu Qurayza.
- (6 AH) The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the Pledge of al-Ridwan.
- (7 AH) The Battle of Khaybar and the sending of envoys to the kings of the regions.
- (8 AH) The Conquest of Mecca and the Battle of Hunayn.
- (9 AH) The expedition of Tabuk — his last military campaign ﷺ, and the delegations of Arab tribes.
- (10 AH) The Farewell Pilgrimage — the great Farewell Sermon.
- (11 AH) His death ﷺ on the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal.
