His social evenings with his family ﷺ

His nightly companionship with his family ﷺ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would tell his wives a story when he sat with them to keep them company and to cheer their hearts. Aisha, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanha, said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told his wives a story one night, and one of the women said: “It seems this is a tale of the jinn!” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you know what khurāfa is? Khurāfa was that a man of ʿUdhrah had his family seized by the jinn in the Jahiliyyah.” It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi in al-Shama'il.

  • He ﷺ enlivened the nights by conversing with his family, giving them companionship and affection
  • His companions would exchange poetry while he remained silent, and he would sometimes smile with them
  • What is derived from his ﷺ socializing with his family: the recommendation to converse with one's wife and to keep her company

The famous hadith of Umm Zarʿ

Aisha, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanha, narrated: Eleven women sat together and vowed not to conceal any news of their husbands, and each described her husband. Then Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “I was to you like Abu Zarʿ was to Umm Zarʿ.” — [Muttafaqun ʿalayh]. In this hadith is the clearest indication of his ﷺ good treatment of his family.

  • He ﷺ said to Aisha: “I was to you like Abu Zarʿ was to Umm Zarʿ.” — [Muttafaqun ʿalayh]
  • This hadith is evidence for the permissibility of evening socializing when in goodness, and for kindly keeping company with one's family
  • Scholars said: the Prophet's ﷺ hearing of this narration is an acknowledgment of its authenticity
