His sleep and his remembrances ﷺ
His posture ﷺ when going to sleep
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his bed, he would place his right hand under his right cheek and say: "O my Lord, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants" — [At-Tirmidhi] in ash-Shama'il and [an-Nasa'i], from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with him. And he ﷺ would sleep on his right side.
- He ﷺ would place his right hand under his right cheek when he took his bed — [At-Tirmidhi]
- He ﷺ slept on his right side.
- He ﷺ would say at sleep: "O my Lord, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants" — [At-Tirmidhi]
- When he ﷺ went to his bed he would say: "O Allah, in Your name I die and I live" — [Muttafaqun 'alayh]
- When he ﷺ woke he would say: "Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He had caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection" — [Muttafaqun 'alayh]
The sunnah of reciting the Mu'awwidhat before sleep
Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to his bed each night he would bring his hands together, blow into them, and recite in them: \"Say: He is Allah, [the] One\" (Surah al-Ikhlâs 112:1), \"Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak\" (Surah al-Falaq 113:1), and \"Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind\" (Surah an-Nas 114:1); then he would wipe his hands over whatever of his body he could, beginning with his head and face and what came within reach of his hands." — [al-Bukhari]
- He ﷺ would recite the three Mu'awwidhat in his hands every night before sleep — [al-Bukhari]
- He ﷺ would wipe his head, face, and body with his hands three times.
- When he ﷺ awoke he would raise his head to the sky and reflect, then recite: "Our Lord, You did not create this in vain" (Qur'an 3:191).
