His fasting ﷺ

His ﷺ guidance in fasting

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked about the Prophet's ﷺ fasting and said: 'He would fast until we would say: He has fasted, and he would break his fast until we would say: He has broken his fast, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not fast an entire month since he arrived in Medina except Ramadan.' — [Muslim].

  • He ﷺ would fast from the start of the month to the point that one would think he had no intention of breaking his fast — [Muslim].
  • He ﷺ did not fast a whole month except Ramadan — [Aisha in Muslim].
  • He used to fast in Sha'ban except for a little — [Aisha in Muslim].
  • He ﷺ would fast three days from the beginning of every month — [Ibn Mas'ud in Abu Dawud].
  • He ﷺ would seek to fast on Mondays and Thursdays — [At-Tirmidhi].

His ﷺ fasting in Sha'ban and Ramadan

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not fast more in any month than he did in Sha'ban; he would fast Sha'ban except for a little, rather he would fast it all.' — [Muslim]. His ﷺ attention to Sha'ban was an indication of his care for righteous deeds in preparation for Ramadan.

  • He ﷺ increased his fasting in Sha'ban out of veneration for Ramadan and to prepare for it.
  • The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, and I like that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.'
  • His ﷺ guidance in fasting: ease, not hardship; regularity, not interruption.
