His names from the Prophetic Sunnah

He ﷺ said: 'I am Muhammad and I am Ahmad and I am al‑Māḥī by whom Allah erases disbelief, and I am al‑Ḥāshir by whom people will be gathered on my footprint, and I am al‑ʿĀqib after whom there will be no prophet.' And in another narration: 'And I am al‑Muqaffā and the Prophet of Repentance and the Prophet of Mercy.' And in Sahih Muslim: 'and the Prophet of the Great Battle.' [البخاري] [مسلم]

  • Muhammad — the praised one in this world and the Hereafter
  • Ahmad — the one who praises Allah more than the other prophets
  • al‑Māḥī — by whom Allah erases disbelief
  • al‑Ḥāshir — by whom people will be gathered on his feet on the Day of Resurrection
  • al‑ʿĀqib — after whom there will be no prophet
  • al‑Muqaffā — the last of the prophets and messengers
  • Prophet of Repentance — through whom the doors of repentance were opened
  • Prophet of Mercy — sent as a mercy to the worlds
  • Prophet of the Great Battle — in the struggle (jihad) in the cause of Allah

His names in the Noble Qur'an

Allah the Exalted named him in His Glorious Book by many names, each name revealing an aspect of his greatness ﷺ. He named him: a bearer of glad tidings and a warner and a shining lamp and a mercy to the worlds, and Muhammad and Ahmad and Taha and Yā-Sīn and al‑Muddaththir and al‑Muzammil and ʿAbdullah and a reminder and a clear warner.

  • Bearer of glad tidings and warner — 'And We did not send you except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.' [Al‑Furqan:56]
  • A shining lamp — 'A caller to Allah by His permission and a shining lamp.' [Al‑Aḥzāb:46]
  • Mercy to the worlds — 'And We did not send you except as a mercy to the worlds.' [Al‑Anbiyāʼ:107]
  • Taha and Yā‑Sīn — among his names in the Qur'an
  • ʿAbdullah — 'And that when ʻAbdullāh stood up he called upon Him.' (translation of the phrase provided)
