His asceticism and humility ﷺ

The simplicity of his life ﷺ

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "The family of Muhammad ﷺ did not have enough barley bread to be satisfied for two successive days until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken." — narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim [al-Bukhari wa Muslim]. And Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never ate from a dining cloth (khawan) nor ate refined/whitened bread until he died." — narrated by al-Bukhari [al-Bukhari].

  • The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not see sifted white bread until he met Allah — narrated by al-Bukhari from Sahl ibn Sa'd [al-Bukhari 'an Sahl ibn Sa'd]
  • Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "By Allah, he never ate his fill of bread and meat twice in one day." — narrated by al-Tirmidhi [al-Tirmidhi].
  • He ﷺ mended his garment with his own hand, patched his sandals himself, and rode a donkey — narrated by Ahmad [Ahmad].
  • His bed ﷺ was of adam (leather) stuffed with palm-fiber — narrated by al-Tirmidhi in ash-Shama'il [al-Tirmidhi (ash-Shama'il)].
  • He ﷺ left no wealth to his heirs except his mule, his weapon, and a piece of land which he made sadaqah (charitable gift).
  • He would serve his household at home, milk the sheep, and assist with household affairs.

His humility ﷺ toward people

He ﷺ was the humblest of people despite the greatness of his station; he sat with the poor and the needy and visited them, accepted the invitation of a servant, and walked with the widow and the orphan to attend to their needs. And when he sat in a gathering no distinction was made between him and his companions, so a stranger would not recognize him until he asked.

  • He would accept the invitation of a free person, a slave, or a bonded servant.
  • He would visit the sick, follow the funeral procession, and accept invitations.
  • He would accompany widows and orphans in their needs.
  • He did not raise himself above his companions in a gathering.
  • He would greet the younger before the older.
  • He would shake hands with whoever he met and would not withdraw his hand until the other withdrew first.

His generosity ﷺ

He ﷺ was the most generous of people, and he was most generous in Ramadan when he met Jibril; his generosity ﷺ was stronger than a rushing wind — [Muttafaqun 'alayh]. And he ﷺ was never asked for anything and said: 'No.' And when he was given money he would distribute it all before evening.

  • The most generous of people — and he was most generous in Ramadan
  • His generosity was stronger than a rushing wind — [Muttafaqun 'alayh 'an Ibn Abbas]
  • He was never asked and said no — if he had it he gave, and if he did not have it he promised.
  • He would distribute all the money before evening.
